[quote name='FDSafetyMentor' post='92896' date='Mar 31 2007, 12:07 ']Hmm, The information that the owner provided us for our recent equipment roster (2006) indicates that this rig was from Orlean VFD in Virginia. Can you confirm we're talking about the Mack with Serial#: B85F-1396 so we can correct our records and update the owner who I guess has inaccurate information?

Thanks for the note and the details on the Dunbar unit!

1. When I photographed Orlean,VA. in 1995, everything there said "Ford" on the front end, and was mostly 2nd-hand stuff from other VA depts.

2. In the book, "Not for Glory" Elkridge VFD,MD. 50th anniversary, on pg. 24 are 2 pictures of the 1960 Mack as Elkridge E-11.

3. In MY book "Firefighting in AlleganyCounty,MD." (2005, Arcadia Publishing), on pg.118 is a picture of the 1960 Mack as Orleans, MD.,Allegany Co.E43-12. The picture was provided by Virginia McLaughlin, formerly of Baltimore,MD.

4. I have been to Orleans MD. VFC to photograph its successor - a 74 CF.,and am quite familiar with this VFC's history.

Until I can arrange to have Ms. McLaughlin's photo scanned for this site, that is the evidence I am presenting...

1960 Mack, sold to Orleans Md. in 1980, when it was replaced by a new Seagrave.

Corgi made a model based on this rig several years ago, and somehow the red was changed to green.

Hope this helps.

Sorry for the large file.

Thanks for the details Warren. I have to agree with you based on that information. I'll notify the editor of the roster so they can correct the entry. I appreciate the follow-up. I hope to see the owner in Winchester in about a month and I'll also talk to him about it. There's a chance that the entry indicating Virginia in the roster was just an editorial mistake and not the actual data submitted by the owner.

Much appreciated!

Jack

BTW - I checked my archives today and I have other photos of this rig from 1999 on and some do not have goldleaf on the doors and others have "Elkridge" clearly visible so I assume that some work was done along the way to improve cosmetics.

That is because the paint on the front fenders had faded to the black primer during the 20 years OVFC had it - the only thing they ever put on the truck was a magnetic sign saying Orleans VFC on each cab door. The paint job as a whole was badly faded.
