2 new Pierce Quantum aerials just delivered to SAFD. These were part of an order that included a new additional Heavy Rescue, a tower and 3 engines (all on Quantum chassis). I believe all have been recently delivered except for the tower.

Just wanted to get your opinion. We are purchasing a new Engine and looking toward the Pierce Arrow XT or Velocity many be an Impel. What are your experinces with each cab like dislike, which do you prefer. I am an Arrow fan mainly due the the rugged cab design, we will have this rig for a long long time. Thanks in advance for your help.

Same with us. We are looking at Arrow XT, Quantum and Velocity. I believe we are leaning towards an XT, but the Quantum has TONS of cab space.

Rick,

Our department is taking delivery of a Velocity rescue with an 84" cab and 20" raised roof. Almost five years ago when we started the project, we thought we would be building on a Lance chassis (or Spartan Gladiator - depending on how the bidding went), or a Dash 2000 as an alternative. We were trying to stay with a "classic" looking cab design that still had plenty of room, had a durable interior, and could accomodate the engine choice (DD Series 60) and options we wanted. If you can remember back to 2005 and 2006, the Lance and Dash were considered high end, and the Arrow XT was being marketed as the urban heavy duty chassis but with far fewer available options - back then. We never were big fans of the Quantum - didnt like the steps and the look was just a little too "new" for us - Very few were in service in our immediate area compared to the number of rigs being delivered with "traditional" cabs.

Well, the 2007 emissions hit and Pierce discontinued both the Lance and the Dash before we could go out to bid. We scrambled to make a decision for an alternative chassis - still werent sold on the Quantum, the XT was purposely being marketed (in my opinion) with the least available options and limited cab sizes to steer customers towards the new Velocity and Impel that were just introduced. We started looking at the Velocity.

We decided pretty much early on that if the one-eleven mirrors didnt back the truck up by themselves that we would go with door mount mirrors. We started to get used to the front cab look of the Velocity. The square headlights helped make it look a little more traditional. We drove several trucks with the Velocity cab and similar wheelbase to evaluate the handling and maneuverability. We were impressed with fit and finish, and how quiet cab interior was (we deleted a headset system after driving chassis - went with wireless for driver and officer just for radio interface). The Velocity is 100" wide - While four inches seems insignificant, I think if you sit in a 96" wide cab and then a 100" wide model, you can really notice a difference in the driver's and officer's seat room. Just my opinion.... And since we went with a 100" wide body, the cab isnt wider than the body which sometimes looks funny. One other minor point - the cab front on the Velocity is fiberglass or some other composite - You cant mount heavy accessories on it (no Mars lights on cab corners, as we found out). Lots of departments have come up with other options for the Velocity - we chose Code 3 Osilasers in the interior warning light bezels and a Dominator strip in the grille as an alternative to the traditional twin Mars lights and Roto-Ray. Seeing various rigs from around the country on this site really helped with functional and cosmetic ideas along the way.

We decided on the Velocity or similar / equal and went to bid in 2009. We added various items to the cab interior for durability - stainless door interiors, door jamb covers, etc. Bid went to Pierce and truck is currently at our dealer getting prepped for delivery. We were able to reserve a 2007 compliant engine to avoid DEF system and 2010 EPA requirements (not sure how this equipment impacted other cab interiors.) We are very happy with the Velocity - dont get me wrong - but now that Pierce is offering the XT with many of the same options and cab variations that used to be available on the Dash (due to customer demand, I'm told), I would be willing to bet we would have had a heated debate over the Velocity or XT if we had to decide it today. Some guys might be willing to give up the additional interior room for a more classic look.

Hope this helps with discussions...Good luck with your project.

Gary
