Old Mack R cabs on Rescue bodies in the 80's had holes drilled in the rain gutters above the compartment doors with nails in them to keep doors closed (as the units got older). Has nothing to do with the manufacturer and all to do with the life cycle of a busy compartment door. Imagine having to put the rig out of service and do a 3 hour changeover to a spare rig everytime the door won't shut properly. with the snap ring lanyards you get no accidents...no equipment strewn all over the street as you go around corners and the ability to remain in service much longer when a problem arises. Rollups are not the answer either....too much waisted space at the tops of the compartments (8-10" for the drum) and they have their fair share of failures and JAMMING as well. Snow and ice jam the doors as well.
Anyone know anything about the new ladders and rescues from fererra. The way the latest edition of FAJ made it sound they where going to be delivered very soon. Can't seem to find any info on them or pics. Was wondering if anyone knew anything or had some pics.

Just out of curiosity....when you go to visit FDNY houses, do you bring anything sweet with you (i.e. pastry, cakes, cookies, doughnuts...) etc? If not, you really should. I have noticed that you are more "welcome" if you bring sweets.
That is not a slam on FDNY either, as you generally get a better reception wherever you go when you have sugar!!

I've been all across this country with the Code 3 for a Cure Foundation and found the same thing, so it's not just the FDNY and it isn't just sweets. Food in general is a universal way of gaining acceptance, like the saying goes "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach"!

When you are buffing and have plans to stop into multiple houses unannounced (just roll up and knock on the door and ask for a quick apparatus picture or whatever) this tends to get expensive. However, if I do phone ahead to make plans to ride, or make an appointment to stop by, I do abide by the "knock with your elbows" law. And if you are invited for the meal ahead of time (such as when you make the phone call) don't be cheap with your goodies.

As I stated, I abide by the "knock with your elbows" law religiously if I am invited to stop by somewhere, or make arrangements ahead of time. However, if you are simply hopping stations to get apparatus shots- (as many as you can in one afternoon....) do you have any idea how expensive that can get in NYC??? You figure a cake/pie/or whatever, enough for the on-duty crew to enjoy, times how many stations???? I don't know about you but that would get expensive for me.
Now, when I do apparatus pictures and don't knock with the elbows, I do make sure I follow up by sending copies of the (usually posed very nicely) rig to however many guys want them, and an enlargement to the Captain of the company so that they can frame it and hang it where they see fit.
