I'm just a bit curious about how the rigs got out of the station with the concrete ending before the street.

The Ramp is curved toward the street. The Fire House doors face East the rear faces West. The rigs pull out and turn right or North to exit onto the Blvd. Fire House 56 is in a city park. Truck 56 became Truck 7 now Truck 7 at 10's. The 756 (Box) moved to 10's and is now Rescue 10. I used to Ride with a friend on Battalion 2 when I was in DFW visiting family. Last time I was there it was Engine 56 and Battalion 2.

Here is a shot of Truck 56 from 1982-taken with an Instamatic and cheap film.



This is a 1970s vintage Ward LaFrance. Engine 56 was also a 1970s vintage Ward LaFrance as I recall.



I do not have any info on either of these-perhaps Mr. Hansen or Mr. Knowles will help out.

Lindsay your are correct. Engine 56 was a WLF and obvious the Truck was too. The Truck had a 65ft Grove Ladder I believe. When I rode with my friend on Batt 2 the Captain on Engine 56 opened the fire house in the early 1970's as a fireman. He told some wild story's of being out on the North Tollway before it was the Tollway at some gruesome wrecks. He said 56 was in the sticks back then and the second due Engine's were normally far behind. He said it helped having the Truck with them. The have all the Dallas History books at 56 on the shelf. I would dig through them while riding along.



I found it funny that all ranks bellow Batt Chief in DFD wore Black Carins 880 traditional helmets with plex-a-glass screen printed fronts in the 1970-1980's. Then in the 1980's when Chief Dodd was running DFD they went to the ugly 990 salad bowl fire helmets and put everyone rank specific colors. Sad very sad, at least they wear the Carins traditional 1000's now. I love my N5A New Yorker and my old 880 no bowl for me <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/fireman.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> .

In terms of location (Dallas), era (1980's), equipment (ALF, WLF, and an ambo with a cool old Whelen lightbar)...this is officially my new favorite fire station ramp shot ever.

Side Note: Chief Dodd and the early-mid 1980's ALF Century's saved Dallas from the horrific Lime-Green. The ALF Century's were the first factory delivered white over red engines since Dallas went Lime-Green in the 1970s'. Dallas only purchased lime-green for a short while unlike Kansas City where we had to endure it for fifteen years.

Rick pretty much covered it. Here are a couple of my shots of Engine 56 and Truck 56 from back then along with their stats. I sure miss those old gasoline engines they had and the beacons and the B&M sirens.

Station 56 had this 1970 WLF, 750 GPM/500 gal. engine and this 1971 WLF/Grove 65 ft ladder. when I first photographed them in the mid 70's. Also had an MICU but I was never able to caatch it at the station to get a pic of it. Engine 56 received this 1983 ALF Century 1250 GPM/500 gal. which replaced the WLF.
