I believe they're still tossing the idea around of going with the larger numbers on the rigs.

Looks like a pumpkin under the front end to me.

The LAFD has been fond of their Peterbilts, the 2 Heavy Rescues and most of the Dozer transporter tractors are Peterbilts and the water tender it replaces (an old DPW water truck.

2009 Peterebilt 365 /KME (Kovatch)

Shop # 60741

AWD (as listed in their documentation)

Caterpillar C-13 470 HP / Allison 6 Speed Automatic Transmission

Darley JMP500 500 GPM Pump /2500 Gallon Tank

TFT Remote Deck Gun

Federal Signal lighting package

Kind of unusual specs (Darley pump and FedSig lights as the LAFD has long used Waterous and are switching over to the Whelen LEDs)

Rescue 842 a BLS Rescue that is currently manned with two firefighter emt's, Under the new staffing plan Rescue 842 wouldd cease to be manned 24/7 and become ready reserve rescue 642 and when needed two firefighter's from Light Force 12 would respond to Station 42 to man it.

The "re-aligned" battalions are going to be huge in terms of administrative responsibilities. I can't imagine from an IMS perspective. 1st Due BC will be forever away. Good luck to the brothers and sisters with the changing times in LAFD.

Any idea which individual companies are swapping/changing? I thought I heard some stations were "swapping".

And when does this go into effect?

Would they simply load up the rigs and switch as I think LAFD has done before (maybe E07?) or would they leave the rigs (except HM) and just move the personnel?

Thanks in advance and any specifics in the future would be great as they develop.

I have heard that the rigs of the closed companies will remain at their respective stations and become Ready Reserves.

Actually if you map it out, it may make sense (in a weird way). What is basically going to happen is Battalions 3 and 7 will be closed and their stations redistributed to other battalions.

Battalion 3 mixed up:

-Station 14 will be become part of Battalion 1 (see below)

-Station 15 will lose the battalion chief (Batt. 3) and will become part of Battalion 11. This move will bring them closer to Battalion 11’s HQ at station 13.

-Station 21 and 46 will now be part of Battalion 13. If you map the station to station distances, Station 33 (Batt. 13 HQ) is approx. 1.7 miles from station 46 and 2.3 miles from station 21.

-Station 26 and 34 will be realigned to be in Battalion 18.

Battalion 7 shakeup:

First off, from, Battalion 2 will be moved from station 55 down to station 44.

-Current Battalion 7 stations: 1, 16 and 47 will become part of Battalion 2. Once Battalion 2 is moved to station 44 it will put them in a more centralized location between these stations and current Batt. 2 stations (12, 42, 44, 50, 55).

-Station 2 and 25 being moved into Battalion 1. Battalion 1 is currently stationed at Station 4. If you map the distances out, station 2 and 25 are fairly close to station 4 so it works out (except they are losing Battalion 7). Add on top that Station 14 will become part of the battalion as well. Of course the net result is Battalion 1’s response area becomes that much larger. However, they will not lose their Staff Assistant.

Someone mentioned closed companies with their rigs becoming ready reserves. What companies are they talking about closing?

Larry,

In a nutshell, according to the 2011 Deployment Plan from LAFD Dept Bulletin # 11-105, on July 5, 2011 the following changes in staffing and resources will occur:

-Closing 1 Division office (Division 1 will be eliminated, now there will be a North and South Division)

-Closing 2 Battalion offices (Battalion 3 and 7)

-Closing 12 Engine companies, opening 1 new engine company (E1, 209, 20, 35, 50, 69, 73, 74, 75, 92, 96 and 105 will be closed)

-Closing 7 Light Forces (LF 14, 17, 28, 38, 47, 58, 72)

-Closing 7 800 series ambulances, opening 3 new 800 series RA

-Closing 1 Paramedic RA and opening a new RA (resources shuffled in Battalion 13).

-Upgrade 10 companies to Paramedic Assessment companies.

-Swap the resources from Fire Station 4 and Station 21 (HMTF 4 will move to 21s and vice versa).

-Eliminate the Staff Assistant Positions from 7 battalion offices.

-Rename the Staff Assistant Positions to Emergency Incident Technicians (EIT).

Battalions 1, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13 will KEEP their Staff Assistants.

Battalions 2, 6, 9, 14, 15, 17, 18 will LOSE their Staff Assistants. All BC in this group will be “paired” with their respective EMS battalions. The BC and EMS will share an EIT.

-Open 1 new EMS Battalion office. Also certain duties currently handled by the EMS battalion chiefs will be reassigned to different areas within the fire department.

-Increase the 400 series Ready Reserve Engine fleet (closed resources like Engines and Light Forces will become ready reserves).

-Increase the 600 series Ready Reserve Ambulance fleet (from closed resources and adding Ready Reserve RA to certain stations).

Im with you on all of it except the engine and light force closures...

For instance Engine 1 is closing so will Light Force 1 remain?

And what is the new engine company?

And when the Light Force 14 and 38 close will that leave Engine 14 and Engine 38?

Sorry for the questions...

In your example, let’s start with Station 1. Engine 1 will be closed and become Engine 401. Light Force 1 will remain open along with RA1.

For station 14, the Engine 14 will remain open but will be upgraded to an Assessment Engine (most likely gaining the paramedic from the Truck). Assessment Light Force 14 will be closed.

Station 38, all that will remain open is the Engine and RA. The light force will be closed and Engine 238 will become Engine 438.
