Did you get to have Calabash style shrimp while there? The only time I've had it was in a little place between Black Mountain and Swannanoa but it was very good and all you can eat at that place.

Andrew: I have this as Hamerly #P-II-1623, one digit off. It was originally ordered by Chesapeake City, VA and later sold to Crawford Township, NC (outer banks) before Oak Grove.

I was blessed enough to be able to make another fire trucking trip this past friday! The weather started off on a sour note, but got better as the day went along, thanks to lots of praying! We'll start our journey at Patterson, NC.



I had shot this engine unlettered last time, because it was brand new and had only been delivered days before I visited. Now it's well in service as their front-line engine.

Patterson inherited this truck when the Lenoir Rescue Squad dissolved a few years ago. LRS's apparatus was distributed throughout the county, with possibly one or more trucks even going to Wilkes County, NC.

Patterson inherited this truck from the Caldwell County Emergency Services: Fire Division. CCES had two identical trucks like this, running as "915" and "916". They were both CAFS trucks and intended to respond anywhere in the county to assist the county VFD's. A few years ago, they were distributed out to FD's that wanted them. This is the former "915" and ended up at Patterson.

And lastly from Patterson is an updated shot of a truck I'd shot last time. Last time I visited, this was Patterson's first responder support truck. The truck now runs as "Medic 30" with Caldwell EMS as a Paramedic QRV and "305" with Patterson FD as a special operations/mass casualty unit.

The next stop was Collettsville, NC; a department Dave, Aaron and I had visted several years ago as well. Collettsville had purchased several "new" rigs since my last visit. This was definitely the target of the visit!

Collettsville got the other Caldwell County Emergency Services brush truck, formerly running as "916". This is now a support truck, but they have plans to put the skid unit back in the truck soon.

Venturing on down the road, our next stop, which I had to bypass earlier that morning due to rain, is Gamewell, NC. Gamewell has had a number of interesting trucks over the past few years. They had received two new trucks and were now housing a unique ambulance from Caldwell EMS that I wanted to shoot.



I'll start off with a re-lettered shot of their Snorkel. They purchased this truck from Lenoir, NC and it stayed lettered as such for many years. Recently, they re-lettered the truck to reflect it's new home.

Gamewell is also now running ambulance service to back up the county EMS. They purchased this used ambulance through a citizen in their district who buys and sells used emergency vehicles.

Gamewell got this truck used from the military. I learned something I didn't know while shooting this truck. When I asked them to pull it out, I noticed that the passenger side front tire on the truck was flat. They didn't seem to mind and went over to crank the truck up. They left the truck running for a few minutes to let it warm up, and out of nowhere, the tire was re-inflated. Apparently, it's some sort of security feature from the military. The tires are designed to go flat, but they re-inflate when the truck is running. Never realized that before!

I'll bet that used to belong to Palatine, IL. Very similar to their ambulances and paint scheme. And their rigs have a "T-xxx" designator on it.

Actually it's common place on most military vehicles, designed to match the type of terrian their operating on.
