We used a Federal SD-10A as our warning siren until about '05, right after we got our ladder truck. Due to the new building, we had to reduce power to the siren, otherwise it would dim our lights down during the cycle. It was also switched from radio activation, to manual and used for 'in town' fires only. Upon hearing it, someone from the water authority would turn on the pumps to boost hydrant pressure. Anyhoo. The ladder responded to a fire call one night, we were on house watch because the county wide radio system failed after a lightning strike. Sadly, the Q on the ladder was now louder than the fire whistle. It hasn't been activated since.

That has to be Dushore, I remember a recording that Chris Kelly (I think that was the name) made of that SD-10 and put on the original Warningsirens.org message board...it was one of the first recordings made of a siren. That is a darn loud siren!!!

It was made by Tripp Light. Unfortunately, thats all I remember right now, but I'll dig into it later tonight after run our weekly drill at the station. That would be me.. I hung a recorder on a rope, and put it over a foot bar on a telephone pole that was directly under the siren. It never recorded as nicely as it did before, I think either the heat or the noise itself, ruined the recorder.
That light is after market. We have a picture of the truck taken in 1945, and it had no emergency lights other than the red lens in the front of the siren. However, by August 6th of 1959, it did have the light. I've seen one before on a photo of a 1949 Cadillac Ambulance from Picture Rocks, Pa. Neither the red flasher on the officer side fender, nor the light in the siren work. The siren itself works fine and proper, as does the roof light.
This rig has had an interesting career. It is still in service, running out of their main station. The wheelbase is short so it can fit into the station.

1987 Spartan Monarch/Saulsbury, canopy cab, 1500/750. It was housed on 8/6/88, 8V92TA Detroit diesel, 475 HP, automatic, Onan 6 KW generator. Delivered late – did not meet spec. While responding to a call one night in early 1989, it rolled over slightly injuring the firefighters on board. There was extensive damage to the body and it was sent back to Saulsbury to be rebuilt. It was out of service all of 1989 and 1990. It was involved in another accident on Telegraph Road on 8/9/96 while responding to a AFA at a private residence. the engine went up the private drive crossing a bridge which collapsed. Unfortunately more damage was done to it trying to get it out. It was sent to Saulsbury the very next day. It was returned from Saulsbury on 12/21/96 and placed back into service on 1/2/97.
