Boston Conflagration May 22, 1964
#1
In 1964, 50 years ago, Boston had conflagration in South Boston that destroyed 17 3-deckers and damaged 18 others. There were also more than 200 small roof fires in the area.

This is one of just 2 or 3 photos I shot before grabbing hose lines, etc.

According to the fire report, 42 (2 1/2") hand lines, 12 deck guns, and a total

of 36,950 feet of hose.  Many of the fire buffs were helping with the lines.  I

arrived just after the fifth alarm was struck.  One to remember!

Remember it well.  My parents picked me up after school and we headed up there becasue my grandmother llived about 1 block from E-21 and the local news caused concern for her.

BFHS has reports from Chief Officers and like Frankie said the Box 52 club has a super report.

Sean Colby (Engine 10) and a fellow member of the Boston Fire Historical Society wrote an excellent article in last Saturday's Boston Herald about the Bellflower Conflagration.
