With regard to rig assignments, what criteria are used? Is it strictly call volume, hours or some combination? Also, with the contract basis for coverage in the LACoFD the individual cities get to pick their staffing levels and company types correct based upon what they want to pay?

Age, Mileage and call volume. With the current fleet of KME's going into service the 1995 KME's are starting to go into reserve status, Most cities don't get to choose what kind of staffing they want, I do beleive some cities have paid extra to have certain type of units placed in there city.

A lot of the high miles on these rigs can be attributed to long-distance "move-ups", daily and especially during Brush Season.

A lot of these moves are authorized "Code R" (code 3) due to the distances involved, especially in the Antelope Valley.

How are "move-ups" handled? Are companies pre-determined to cover "sister companies" or are the geographically driven with move ups coming from further away from the incident versus adjacent areas to the incidnet?

This rig is now Engine 574, Engine 12 has a recieved a new Engine.

A senior operator at LA Dispatch went into this on the late, lamented www.lacountyfire.com forums a few years back.



The CAD system holds the "Running Cards" for unit dispatch, I believe 5 alarms deep. Also in the Matrix is the move-up list.



Ex: E127 move Stn.16. Sqd, 7 move Sqd. 69, etc. I think there is a finite list of move up Companies, so after the last recommendation, seat-of-your -pants old school dispatching worked it out.



I lived in LA for a few years in the 80's, when LACoFD had 3 dispatch centers: LA, San Gabriel Valley, and Antelope valley. Back then, move-ups were coordinated by County Phone between the 3, as well as on the radio. In the pre-MDT era, everything seemed to be put out over the air. "Squad 36, in place of numerous other squads, traffic collision, Avenue A East and State Route 138, time out xxxx". Bear in mind that 36's is in Carson, in southern LA county, and the response was in the Antelope Valley in the north county area!



I have hours of off-the-air tapes from back then....gotta find 'em.

Chief, as I recall, Take an incident in Battalion 7 (South LA): would receive the appropriate 1st-in, 2nd in units, with move-ups commencing mere minutes later, when a working fire was declared. Nearer units responded on the 2nd, and a move-up map would resemble a sinkhole (the incident) sucking additional rigs and subsequent move-ups from all directions.



Since 3-4-5th alarm move-ups usually had to come from other battalions some considerably distant, the "Code R" moveups, using freeways, accomplished the coverage in shorter time. There were coverage gaps as this process evolved, inevitably . And it's a biig county. Some rigs surplussed out recently had well over 140,000 miles on the clock, a lot of move-up miles in that number.

Is 140k miles the average the units are surplussed? I wonder because we have some aerials with 160k miles and engines with 220k miles, spares of course.

Squad 7 in West Hollywood is the primary move up squad I've heard them numerous times get sent to Station's in North County. LAC also tries to utillize the two cars Engine's, 244, 264 and 236 for coverage.

Good deal for 7's, Straight up the 405 to the West AV, or down the 14 to the East AV. Thats a helluva ride. With all the new stations opening in Santa Clarita, those 2-cars are on borrowed time, i think.



Firescooby: I think 140k miles is down the low end, as well. Hawthorne's former Crown truck company, when auctioned, had close to 200k. It was on it's 2nd diesel engine when surplussed. I'm told Hawthorne had nary a problem with it, but after the county absorbed the city, this rig bounced all over the county, filling in for truck co's being repaired in E.L.A. My sources told me that freeway move-ups just tore the rig to shreds

Allot of the 95 KME's are being bumped into reserve status as well as some of the 1999 KME;s are being bumped down to slower stations.

The ex-Hawthorne Crown pumper had around 135k on it when it was donated to a local school program. I almost purchased the Crown, 75ft quint a year ago, but the truck was not in the mechanical condition the seller stated by a long shot, and the odometer only read 53k or so on it. Whether that is accurate or not, I don't know, but there was a column for it to roll over 100k... That being said, you are correct, there have been numerous mechanical issues with that truck in the past years. It is too bad, sad to see your dream collector truck slip through the cracks because of expensive mechanical repairs, many of which could have been avoided.

Mike, you are so right.... I had missed out on purchasing it a couple times before, and thought the time had finally come. It was/is my dream Crown to own, along with our 1970 Crown pumper. It seems to have disappeared again, or the seller has it stored somewhere. Maybe the opportunity will knock again.
