The KMEs have not been popular. It seems that 2 and 22 are always going to the shop. 11 seems to have had the bugs worked out. They are in the process of working out new bids. I'm hearing anywhere from 5 to 8 engines and 2 to 5 tillers.
Speaking of 11... Only 3 of the 6 bay doors actually work. The doors at that station have been a NIGHTMARE!!! The front door of the middle truck bay decided to come down while the truck was coming out. It busted the communications system off of the fromt of the dumpster of the tower. The engine has to run out of the rear of the truck's bay. The truck runs out of the engine bay because of the tight turn to come forward out of the rear of the middle bay. The mini-pumper has to cross the floor to come out of the rear of the truck bay as well. It's a mess!
Ground has been broken for the new #28. I hear that they let the Arborist permit expire (to cut the trees on the lot) and they have to start that process over. Sounds crazy but true. You have to have permission from the City of Atlanta to cut a tree for a Atlanta for a City of Atlanta project. Getting permits from the City of Atlanta to build a City of Atlanta Fire Station is a crazy process!
The search is on for a new lot for #22. The Five Year Plan calls for new stations in the Peachtree Battle area and Princeton Lakes (Camp Creek Pkwy) area. I think that they will eventually just move #23 North to cover Peachtree Battle. The neighborhood associations are trying to raise money to fix #23 up, but it doesn't seem to be going very well.
There is >$1 million available for station renovations. Word is that #7 will get at least half of that. We were told that when it is renovated (if?) that both EMS supervisors will move there until they can get an Engine #7 back in service. (Not looking forward to that!)
You may soon hear "SPRINT" units in service. This is something that Cochran did in Shreveport. It's an EMS first-responder unit. The current battle is if they will be ALS or BLS. The idea is to reduce the call volume of the busiest engine companies. Currently, I am hearing that they will be at 2 and 16. If they are BLS, it will be a waste of money, because you will still have to send an ALS engine with them.
It seems that I can remember a department somewhere that had BLS rescue units that were shut down because they were a waste of money because they weren't ALS and an engine still had to run with them in most cases. Oh! Yea! I remember, It was ATLANTA!
Regardess, if we don't get the 911 mess straightened out, we're wasting our time and money anyway. We are being told that there is an effort to get some input into APDs 911 system. Currently, AFRD had no representation in how we are dispatched. Supposedly... The new Assistant 911 Director will have to have some fire dispatching (not actual fire) experience. Let's hope for the best...
