Our friend Ron Bogardus has been busy again this winter in Florida. here are some shots from a recent trip "Down South"...



First is Broward County Sheriff Engine E-106. Shot at the "shops" , it is an engine/ambulance. A 2011 Pierce Velocity, 1500/750/0 .. This one of a kind unit was delivered in July 2011 and still is not in service.

Also shot by Bogie, This 2010 Spartan - Rosenbauer Quint is an ex-demo assigned to the South Trails Fire District, Ft Myers . It has a 1500 pump/ 500 tank, and a 75' ladder. Note the booster line in the front bumper. It responds to brush fire calls as needed.It runs as Ladder 62.

why is it not in service after 7 mos

This 2011 Pierce Quantum runs as Engine 6 out of the Port Everglades Station by the Broward County Sheriff Dept. It has a 3000 gpm pump, 500 water and a 1800 gallon foam tank!

And last for now is this portable pump. Not your normal portable pump, it is a whopping 5000 gpm and supplies 12" hose. It is one of two utilized by the Broward County Sheriff Dept, at the Port Everglades Station.

Fires at the Port Id guess.



The port has several fuel storage tanks, Large Ships including Cruise ships that come in. Theirs endless possibilities for what thy might use it for.

My guess its so long is they are having trouble finding someone who can drive it. What a waste of tax dollars!!!

I dunno, I like to think that they did some research ahead of time and determined that something like this would meet their unusual needs in that area.

I think the Navy had one or two of these at the Naval Base in Norfolk at one time. Or something very similar.

Station 106 has a very unique territory and this apparatus was designed to make the most of what three people can do. Station 106 is located at the far western part of Broward County, out in the middle of the Everglades. Lots of swampy areas, lots of water, lots of gators and lots of snakes. Most of their responses involve MVC's and water rescues, but they still need a pumper out there, which also pulls a rescue boat. Having transport capabilities gives them a head start on getting a critical patient to a hospital. The other solution is to station a medic unit out there, but they would spend most of their time doing nothing, waiting on that bad call to happen. Giving the crew a transport capable pumper is a lot cheaper than the cost of having two Medics stationed out there.

But a full size engine? Why not something like what Volusia County, FL just got, more of an ambo than a full sized engine? Still curious as to why it would take so long to put in service, if any of the new Broward units that I would think would take so much time because it's so complex would be one of Ron's other photos, the new industrial engine at the port. A longer wheelbase engine taking seven months? Me thinks something else has to be going on....

Yes, a full size engine. This is the only engine for many miles. I have no idea why the long time getting it in service.

I thought they already had a full size engine out there, this would be an additional engine, not the only one. That would make a bit more sense to have such a unit.

sorry maybe I am old school but I just feel its a waste to use a half a million dollar fire engine to transport a patient to the hospital.
