Nothing wrong with old school, I just don't think you are getting a clear picture of the situation they are facing. They don't transport stumped toes and bellyaches, these are critical patients that cannot wait on an ambulance to get out there to them. Station 106 is not a busy station, compared to most, but the things they get are serious and this rig was designed to cover all the possibilities that the crew might face.

I dont know if you recall from when you took the pics, but do the hard sleeves on this mini-superpumper go all the way around the other side? Dont know how often they use it but pretty awesome. Any idea who made it? I know Kidde and Williams Fire make large trailer pumps...Kinda like the NJ Neptune System in the UASI Region

I agree 100% I also think it is asinine to use a TDA for car accidents.

Just recently, I saw an Atlanta TDA used at an accident scene on I-75 downtown to block 3 northbound lanes of traffic. It was the best use of a rig to direct block traffic I've seen! Ain't nobody was fitna hit them boys!

We regularily use our platform for "traffic control" on I-85 and I-285. It can easily close down up to four lanes if necessary. It's nicknamed "The Million Dollar Roadblock".

[/quote] After Dallas Engine 22 got hit four plus times on LBJ I-635 in North Dallas they decided to start sending Truck 20 a TDA. As Truck 20 approaches the scene they crab walk the tiller to move traffic. After talking with my Friend at BC2 and a Staff Deputy Chief they feel it had been a great success and has saved the crew on a number of occasions from near disaster. The TDA is large enough it create a pocket of protection for the Engine and Rescue unit. My department adopted the same procedure modeled after Dallas. Our Tower Ladder blocks for our Engine on I-35 and any major roadway. We began sending the Truck with the Engine on all MVA's. It provides blocking and extra man power for the accident. One company officer is the safety officer during the incident and monitors traffic the other company officer supervises the accident. The extra firemen on the scene has allowed us to clear the scene quicker thus being on the roadway less time. It has worked extremely well for us and other departments in the KC Metro have adopted the Dallas plan after seeing us use it. At the end of the day it is my responsibility to get my brothers home, this is just one way to help get them back safe and sound. If our tower is hit it can be repaired or replaced, my brothers it might not be as easy.

I have been reading with great interest the recent posts about providing a safe scene on highways. I work for my state DOT and quite often we are closing lanes utilizing "crash trucks". The 9-ton dump trucks have a crash attenuator and arrow board afixed to the rear of the trucks. To close just one lane, we need three trucks, each staggered about 1,000ft apart. To close 2 lanes, 5 trucks are needed.. All of this, in addition to overhead variable message boards, are still not enough. People nowadays, and I am convinced of this, drive while sitting on their brains. They wait until the last possible second to get over, and more often than not, cause an accident or hit one of our trucks. I can not stress this enough, working on a highway is THE most dangerous place to work. I can tell everyone horror stories of what I have seen. A truck can always be repaired. Kudos to those departments with coming up with novel ideas to create a safe scene on highways.

The city of White Plains in Westchester county New York has sent a tiller or its replacement a tower to all highway calls for over 30 years ! They got laughed at, but not one firefighter as gotten hurt

Well, I just heard from a reliable source that NASCAR is going to get Pierce to build them some TDA demo trucks. They're going to use them to crab along behind the speed drier trucks to block traffic from hitting them.
