Who built all of their previous bodies? I thought I remembered seeing some of the older squads with just 1 telescoping light tower either on the driver's or passenger's side, any reason behind that?

I think Phenix built the older squads. Not sure about the light towers, except maybe the heavy squads had different ones?

What do the squads carry in their compartments?  Can't be full of EMS gear...My only exposure to them is from Emergency.

Any chance for a walk around of open compartments?

My understanding is that they are basically light rescue trucks tweaked for their local area so the ones in the hills would be a little better equipped for over the side stuff, one near the LA river swift water etc. Also all of the crews fire gear, turnouts, SCBA etc.

The squad program began as rescues, the paramedic part came along later. More than a decade before Emergency! there was a TV show called Rescue 8 that followed the exploits of an LA County rescue squad.

Found this great set on Flikr of a walkaround of one of the new Paramedic squads. Still can't remember where they keep the ALS equipment:

EMS gear is on the passenger side of the squad and the firefighting gear is on the driver side of the squad.
