1954 Reo/Boyertown, Civil Defense Unit, in service in 1956, sold to the Crossman Drum & Bugle Corp.



Longwood



1973 Walter/Young, canopy cab, 1000/1000. This was a rather unique engine since it was all-wheel drive, first one built by Young in the US, one of only two built (the other was Willow Street, Lancaster County). It has a Ford 534 CI gas engine, and a automatic transmission. Housed 10/13/73. It was involved in a serious accident at Rt. 202 and Rt. 1 while responding to a call in Delaware County. It was converted to rear-wheel drive at this time. It was sold in 9/91 to Turtle Creek, Ark.



Leacock



1950 FWD, semi-cab, 750 GPM, cost $10,500, sales order no. 70116, model F-75-T, delivered 10/20/50, still had in 1981.

Additional info:



Community Fire Co.-Virginville (Berks Co.),PA purchased a used tanker from a local fuel oil co. The chassis was a 1963 Ford. In 1973 they had the tank remounted on a new Dodge D800 chassis. The remounting and some body work including the low side compartments was done by John M. Hill of Hamburg,PA. It is a 300/1600. In 2005 it was sold to an individual by the fire company.

This piece was sold by Everett to the York County, Pa Hazmat Team, it went by the designation HAMR 20 (all of the York County Hazmat units have the HAMR designation). From what I am told, it is in the process of being replaced or has been replaced already. I know that Braumbaugh Fire Apparatus is the same as a Bruco... but it was interesting to see the Brumbaugh logo plate on it... first one I have ever seen.

I know this piece looks like a Hamerly, but it is actually an LTI. I didn't know LTI built pumpers, but when I saw it.. it had the LTI plate on the back of it.

For those interested, this was originally Co.22 - Tuxedo-Cheverly VFC, PG CO. MD. (But did Mack build the body?? )

Also Rheems 1, where was the Brumbaugh logo on the xEverett squad? The oldest Brumbaugh logoed truck I have found is a 1940 Chevy squad truck for Lonaconing,MD.

To my knowledge, maybe Dave Organ can confirm, LTI was NOT building fire apparatus bodies, aerials or pumpers, in 1977. They utilitzed other manufacturers, then Conestoga for their bodies. LTI badged pumpers didn't start appearing in quantity till the mid 1980s. I cannot explain an LTI badge on the back of this rig - maybe a refurb?

1952 Mack A-series, full cab, city service ladder truck, 200/200, completely enclosed sides, rounded rear fenders, large spotlights behind cab, replaced in 1969 and traded into the Seagrave dealer. Sold to Hellman (York County).



Does anybody know how long Hellam had it and where it went after that ?

This beauty is currently (and has been for about 2 or 3 years) undergoing a full restoration. Oreland celebrates their 100th anniversary in 2008, so expect to see it late '07 (poss at the Independence day parade), or in 2008.

The Highspire rig IS a Hamerly. The Hamerly logo can be seen on the rear compartment door. It was refurbed by LTI around 1990, as I recall, but I can't find the info with the exact year.

Shortly after WW II they built a pumper on a Diamond T chassis for Terre Hill Fire Company, using a 500 gpm Darley Champion pump. It was successfull and other Fire Companies in the area came to Stauffer and had Fire Apparatus built. This was never a large operation with only a few rigs per year being built. The only advertising that I know of was by word of mouth, and the rigs were built on chassis supplied by the Fire Companies. Stauffer built rigs were delivered new in 3 Pennsylvania Counties that I can document, Lancaster, Chester, and Berks. The biggest users of Stauffer apparatus that I can find (two rigs each,) were West Grove, Terre Hill and Kimberton. Stauffer also used Hale pumps on later apparatus. All I can find info on had 500 gpm or smaller pumps.



When UL took over the testing of new Fire Apparatus in the 1970's from the old NBFU, they required pump tests to be completed at a drafting test pit, and the creek next to the Stauffer shop did not comply, so Stauffer discontinued building Fire Apparatus.
