A possible project
#1
Have been offered a chance to buy a 57 ALF (S/N L-5473) for $1000. Needs paint, batteries and the carbs for it. Before i proceed I am trying to get a ideal what it would cost approx to purchase them. I have captured as much info as I could to track these down but am treading a bit into unfamiliar territory.

The engine number shows J8-27 and it looks to be a Owens J engine according to the manuals. Says the carbs are a Zenith downdraft carb (possibly 1 cylinder). Can some1 here steer me in the right direction to get a approximate costs on these units?

It sounds like you have a Lycoming J series motor in that pumper, they do indeed use Zenith downdraft carbs. Check airplane junkyards, the Lycoming was basically an airplane motor from what I am to understand. It is also dual ignition, 24 spark plugs, 24 plug wires, 2 distributors and 2 sets of points. You really need the orignal motor manual to set the timing or an airplane mechanic LOL
