From what I heard, the HME/Saulsburys were too big, and had their problems.... Rumor was that the HME cab shouldn't have been built up as large as it was, and heard the rigs ended up having cement weights added to rear axles, which over time took the toll on the springs etc.

I liked it. But when I asked around (any FD;s with a moderate amount of runs) there was problems with the chassis. 
Unfortunately, nice looking doesn't always equate to workability or practicality......I think there are always some departments what "swear" by a certain manufacturer, and then a neighboring department will tell you they wouldn't give a plug nickel for that same manufacturer!! It's all in your department's preference, and then more importantly, the service up-keep of the units !

I heard the newest Tower Ladder have a similar problem, and steel weights were welded underneath the rear ends to prevent tipping

Hate to hijack the thread, but I use photobucket as well. Once the pictures are uploaded into the photobucket gallery, I scroll over the photo and copy the link that comes up. I then use the insert button here and paste that link and it works great everytime. Hope this helps. Looking forward to more FDNY photos.

They were definitely "eye candy" but (in my humble opinion) too big for most of the boroughs. BTW - R1 SmokeEater: Love the videos!

I find it interesting that all of the Rescues and the Haz Mat had Red steel wheels in the construction photos and then they ended up with Aluminum wheels. Two possibilities I can think of...first and most likely is that aluminum wheels have much better heat dissapation than steel wheels so the brakes stay much cooler...on the larger, heavier apparatus I can see that as being a big plus and worth the extra money. Another thought could also be replacing the entire front line fleet of rescues and haz-mat at one time is a major acheivment for Ferrara with lots of publicity...they may have "thrown in" the nice shiny wheels at no charge to make the photo ops better...does not account for the Seagrave 95' towers though. Just two ideas from my head, with no official confirmation or information from anyone at FDNY.
