House Fire in Portland 12-27-13
#1
On 12-27-13 a box was transmitted at 07:54 for a house fire at 2021 SE161 Ct.

The reponse was E31, E7, E29, E30, Truck 7, C3, C4, Gresham Truck 71 and C7.

It was B shift, so Gresham crews were manning E31. They reported fire showing.

Approaching on 162nd, I saw a large column of smoke from quite a distance.

Truck 7 was opening the roof, but there was too much smoke for a photo.

Great photos. Is it just me or does that ladder say Truck 2? was truck 7 using a different rig? also when you say that Gresham was in the engine do they swap by the day between engine and ladder or something?  thanks

Different cities staff the same rig?

It's a long story, but Truck 7 is using it temporarily.

Portland Engine 31 is right on the city line and a lot of their runs are in Gresham.

Rather than close the station, Gresham agreed to MAN it on B shift while

we MAN it on A and C shifts. Since there are no females assigned to Engine 31,

it is MANNED. !

Prior to this being Portland Station 31 is it was Fire District 10, Station 45.  When Portland and Gresham began annexing unincorporated Multnomah County in the 80's and 90's the station landed on the Portland side of the city line.  Many of Portland stations on the east side are old District 10 stations (7, 2, 29, 31) were all numbered station 4X in the Dist 10 days.  Gresham got stations 44, now 74, 49 now 75 and 47 now 76 from District 10.    District 10 used to run Fire Dispatch for all of East Multnomah County out of the old station 45.  They dispatched for District 10, Gresham, and District 14 (Corbett Rural), essentially everything east of 82nd Ave to the Hood River County line.

Thanks for the clear explanation. I vaguely knew about all that, but it was before I got out here.

Another great series! Looks like you were in the right spot to get some good fire shots! Didn't Portland buy 2 quints to replace engines and ladders in a station?
