Not many Mack A model fire tucks were built, much less two in the same building in running order! This was not original to Forest Hill but was purchased in the 1970s from Piney Grove VFD whose plan was to scrap the truck and keep the pump for training purposes. Luckily it was saved!

A few weeks ago I got a unique opportunity to shoot Forest Hill VFD in Winston-Salem. From 1953 until 2006, Forest Hill VFD operated as station 19. The station itself sits well inside the city limits and with less than a 5 square mile terriory due to annexations, the department merged with neighboring South Stokes VFD in 2006.

 

The station and apparatus is still owned by the Forest Hill Civic Club and the former Chief plans on eventually opening the station back up as a museum. Until then, the chief maintains all of the trucks and upkeep on the former station.

 

Inside is all kinds of jewels including old Firehouse & Fire Engineering magazines dating back to the 1950s-80s, very old IFSTA manuals on firefighting principles, air packs, helments, extinguishers, grenades, radios and any other thing imaginable relating to the fire service and the former Forest Hill VFD.

So although Forest City merged with South Stokes, this station is no longer operating as an active fire station?

Correct. The former members of Forest Hill became firefighters with South Stokes if they chose when Forest Hill closed down from active service. The only apparatus given to South Stokes was a 2005 Kenworth T300 tanker and a 1980s E-350 ambulance. The apparatus shown was owned by the civic club and after a legal battle with the county FH was able to keep all of their former trucks somehow.

Interesting situation, and a very nice collection of older apparatus.  The R-model Mack looks as though it has just been delivered!

Great stuff! I agree, that R model is gorgeous. Any inside photos of the station? It must be deeper than it looks.

It was in front line service until 2006. Forest hill is no longer an active FD.

because each motor series starts at 1001(or some at 1000). this is actually #3 in the 611 series, as the 611 series started at 1000. the Doylestown rig that was perverted into a pickup was 1001 in the R686 Series. besides, this one is a 1967 and Doylestown is a 1976. a couple hundred were built in between, regardless of serial number.

Going by the #'s so tell me why,please ?

Ok got it but I was talking about a white R #1001 that was out of Mass, maybe started with an m that comes to the truck shows owned buy a guy named Mert who cut it up to make a pick up. Thanks John.

Bolton was the 7th or 8th overall R built. it was the first R685

Happened to be out and about today and passed by Arcadia-Reedy Creek-Hampton VFD in Davidson County and found a couple of their rigs on the ramp.

 

First up,

 

A-RC-H VFD Tanker 333

1986 GMC Brigadier / 4-Guys

1000 gpm/1400 tank.
