I was up at my parents' house in Kirkland tonight when there was a structure fire dispatched in the Juanita area. Most of the first alarm assignment was already out at a serious motorcycle accident a short distance away that would up having 2 patients transported to Harborview (Seattle's Level 1 trauma center), so the rigs here were pretty random. All shots are targets of opportunity with my cell phone camera.

First up is Northshore Engine 57, a late model Pierce Arrow XT.

The rear of Engine 57. I really liked these rigs.

Bellevue Ladder 1, which FLEW up to this fire from its quarters, and Battalion 42 from Bothell, which was the first due BC due to Battalion 21 from Kirkland being at the motorcycle MVC.

Redmond Engine 11, a late model Pierce Velocity. I think they got this earlier this year.

Woodinville Ladder (formerly Truck) 31.

Why did they change it's designation from Truck to Ladder?

The fire departments and fire districts in King County Mutual Aid Zone 1 changed designations from Truck to Ladder to be consistent with the other departments in King County.

Brian is correct. It's sort of an accident they even wound up being called Trucks in the first place. Redmond was the first one to do it back in 1993 with Truck 16. Back then everybody else in Zone 1 still called them Ladders, so it was a little odd to have Truck 16 in Redmond responding on the same call with Ladder 31 in Woodinville. Within the next year or so all the Zone 1 departments switched to Truck. I remember back in the 2000s Seattle was going to change the name Ladder to Truck, but for some reason that never happened. Then eventually Zone 1 caved and went back to Ladder. Even Tacoma, which had called them Trucks forever, switched to Ladder in the last 10 or so years. Bellevue has dumped the Lightforce terminology, even though Ladder 3 still technically runs as a Lightforce.

Personally, I like Truck better.

Does anybody in Portland know what this rig is going to be used for? A new heavy rescue, perhaps? It looks awesome, by the way.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be replacing Squad 1. Current Squad 1 is an ALF, maybe a 2004-05. Station 1 also has a massive USAR tractor-trailer rig that's pulled by a Pierce tractor (Arrow XT I think...)

Whoa. Heavy rescue tiller with crane?? Good find.
