A couple questions, if they have already been answered sorry,

What is a FAST truck?

When/why are they TSU/TAC units called, and what is there purpose.

How many spares and reserve units are there?

Reserves are fully equiped correct and spares arent?

Also were are the majority of the spare/reserves kept?

FDNY MCC#1 rear view. This was 15 hours into the incident and units were going home. By this time the building was in dager of collapse due to the weight of water and ice. 3 handlines were withdrawn about 1 AM, two TL in operation with a third being set up. Big bore external attack.

John- Basically FAST = RIT. The Tactical Support units are more guys and more goodies. Reserves, spares are numbered in the 500, 700 series and are in various houses around the city.

These and all other questions (more than you'll ever want to know) are answered in "FDNY an Operational Guide" available at FSP books in Hudson MA [url="http://www.fire-police-ems.com/books/bf1116.shtml"]http://www.fire-police-ems.com/books/bf1116.shtml[/url] (not a plug). It goes for about $36 (incl S&H). This is 233 pages of how and why FDNY goes about doing what they do. It cannot be read in one sitting.



Another, very informative site is [url="http://www.fdnewyork.com"]http://www.fdnewyork.com[/url] run by a Supervising Dispatcher for FDNY. Full of love and lore of/for the dept.

The TSU is manned by 1 FF, and responds on signals 10-76(high rise office fire), 2nd alarms, water related incidents, major emergencies such as collapes, or when special called. They carry all sorts of specialized tools. They have a variety of floodlights and a light tower, and a boat, and raft.



There are 22 reserve engines, 10 reserve ladders, 1 reserve squad, and 1 reserve rescue, all kept at different locations throughout the city. Reserves are fully equipped, while when a company gets a spare, they have to change over all the equipment.

Per my copy of the FDNY operations manual (definitely a good buy and a good read) R6 is in Manhattan and is most likely the ALF and R7 is at Squad 270 (Queens)

To add on:



The TSU carries: winch, light tower & tripod lights, several generators, Stanley hydraulic system, concrete drill and a raft with water rescue equipment.

Rescue 6 was only in service for a few months immediately prior to, during and after the Republican National Convention in 2004. The spares don't actually have numbers assigned. I believe there is one HME/Saulsbury, the ALF "Spirit of Oklahoma", the Mack MR/General, and now the former R1 E\-One. There may be one more, but I'm not sure, but if there is, that would allow each rescue their own spare.

This, I believe is MR8802, and is now Rescue 5's collapse unit

One of the '96 HME/Saulsbury rigs was a dedicated spare for Haz Mat Co. 01. Unknown if it still is.
