Wow!!! I know many love old Seagrave, ALF, Hahn, etc but I love this truck!!! Many of my 1st in my fire service career on this rig and 18 years of a hard life in Dale City but many loved her. I love our Hahn but this one of the toughest rigs I know. Donated to Gulf Park Estates FD in Miss. after they lost many rigs to hurricane Katrina.

They painted it and updated the lights but she is the same tough rig. Assigned to FS10 in Dale City for its entire career front line 92-96 with the Hahn as its back up which was rarley because not many could drive the Hahn well. Went into reserve in 2000 when the Pierces arrived but held her own until she left. I miss this truck.

Just got word this truck is being donated to a VFD in Queens NY who lost their rig to Hurricane Sandy.

I just got confirmation that this unit will be going to the West Hamilton Beach VFD in Queens NY.

Okay, I'll bite. What exactly is the PWC pumper spec? Is it an idyllic minimum of tank and pump size or an effort to type rigs by capabilities within a class spec? Is it an attempt to standardize drivelines (motor, transmissions) so that maybe, in the (distant, not too distant) future there might be a PWC Apparatus Shop that does repair and maintenance to ALL fire and rescue units used within PWC?

Who "decreed" this PWC pumper spec, PWC alone or was it the volunteer departments?

Just want to know...

I do not like the county spec for pumpers. Why can't we keep it simple and learn from someone like arlington who chose to keep it simple. The units so far look like rescue engines when they should just have the minimum space to carry the minimum engine company equipment. Is there really a reason for the "frenched in" ladders on stonewall's and dale city's rigs. Horrid. I would rather bust out the old Hahns or E-Ones and run those up and down the highway. Good luck to Stonewall on their new Pierce, May your luck be way better than what we have had at Belvoir. I'm sure we will have a few units sitting at Atlantic when your pumper is delivered. On a side note- Kudos to Dale City for going with KME and trying something different. I hope those units do well for your department.

Oh No...did you say Rescue Engine? These are not rescue engines (though they look like it, only 2'.5" shorter). These are state of the art firefighting machines designed for the extreme growth in population for Prince William County VA, home of a few 9 story buildings. These engines have been designed for the anticipation of future firefighting equipment and minimum requirements for an engine company in a bedroom community.

Didn't you know that every engine company should have 2' deep compartments and 4 coffin compartments so you have to climb on top of the engine to get equipment. The hose beds are at the perfect height for ease with hose deployment and bedding, while preventing injury at the same time. Just don't fall off getting equipment out the top of the engine.

Did you get a shot of the hose bed of E511 by any chance? I would like to see if they didn't follow spec as well.

Sr, though your question may not have been answered, the most important thing to know is that in certain PWC Departments to NEVER, under ANY circumstances, leave the rig doors open while in quarters (despite it saving time getting out), as the doors will at some point spontaneously fall off and cause a truly catastrophic traffic hazard. #2 - Don't even think about hanging your gear on the rigs (though it clearly saves crucial time getting dressed and getting out the door), as it could scratch the paint and make the rigs less parade friendly. Ahhh… priorities <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> (insert slight tone of sarcasm)

Thanks for loving the floor at my firehouse, it's in Fairfax County. Anyway, I would like to play devil's advocate here; assuming this is a reality and I am not just being sucked into some internet hoax.

Having volunteered in a system where there was part-time career staffing Monday through Friday from 7a-3p at a fire company with a rear mount aerial ladder truck with a neighboring company having a tractor-drawn aerial device, there were plenty of times when the ladder truck requiring one driver got out ahead of the truck requiring two drivers.

Now that I said that, I question the desire to purchase a tractor-drawn aerial ladder truck by DCVFD. What is DCVFD's motivation for such a purchase? I could see it being a "recruitment tool", i.e., "I want to volunteer there because they have a tiller truck" or is there a demonstrated tactical need based on unique multi-family dwelling complexes?

Today's tiller ladder trucks are not the same size as the tractor-drawn aerial ladders of the 1970's and 1980's; in fact; compared to their older counterparts, they are behemoths. Doubt me? Go ahead and park them side by side; what is gained in maneuverability is lost in the overall size of the apparatus, especially if a significant tip load is expected.

And since DCVFD has never owned a tiller truck, where is all the tractoring and tillering experience going to come from: Seattle, Portland, LA City, San Francisco; somewhere else on the Left Coast?

My two cents: Buy an Aerialscope. There is already experience driving, positioning and operating a mid-mount tower within the department. The Aerialscopes are workhorses and with a little TLC, will pretty much last forever. In a municipality where lightweight construction is king, the 'Scope gives unparalleled flexibility for quick deployment of a heavy stream at any angle or elevation and the security to effect a rescue at any angle or elevation within reach from a substantial platform.

I look forward to hearing a sensible response and spirited debate to my points.

Peace out.

I would like to start off with an apology; I have post the wrong truck. I have heard from what I consider a few reliable resources that DCVFD is currently looking to purchasing tractor drawn aerial from small department in southern Va. After getting more information it looks like they are looking at a 1990 Seagrave from Barboursville VFC which used to be Truck 2 in Charlottesville. I personally think it would be pretty cool to see a tractor drawn running again in PWC and I hope that the DCVFD does in fact go through with purchasing a tractor drawn aerial.

Don't believe everything you read on the 'net. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

Anyhoo, my volunteer department was within days of purchasing the tiller from Barboursville, but alas, it didn't work out for us in the end. If DCVFD does end up purchasing it, they'll be getting one hell of a rig.

HOW COME BARBOURSVILLE IS GETTING RID OF IT ALREADY. WASN'T IT BEING USED?

Wow such carziness on the web. So let's get a few things straight.

1. The current tower in Dale City is several years from being replaced

2. We will look at any demo that comes by but that doesn't mean we will buy it. Taylor why didn't you post Dale City was going to buy a Sutphen when they brought by a demo 3 weeks ago?

3. What's the 1st style of truck anyone brings up when you mention its time to start looking at the future??? Been here a while and everytime you start looking at a new one some start say a TDA.

4. Yes a group went to look at the Bauborsville rig so that they can see what issues a TDA can bring such length etc etc.

5. Sr how many companies are running TDA's in the DMV? Quite a few and many have just come into service over the past few years so getting help with training and info isn't as hard as you think. A scope hmmm..... too heavy, too many are shop queens and one hell of a price for a ton of limitations compared to so many other MM platforms out there.

So here is the deal..... When Dale City starts looking to buy something like a new ladder truck all options are looked into and after tons of research and real data a choice will be made. Lord I could remember when MM platforms showed up in Dale City and the rumors and neysayers raised their ugly heads and look everything worked out.

YVFD, I don't know who your reliable rescources are but I can sy it wasn't me and since it wasn't me then they are not completely true.

Trey, Quillers are pretty cool

Anyways thanks all for running wild with someones hopes and dreams and making my phone blow up all morning.
