the names come from the phonetic alphabet used over the radio, thus A-Adam B-Boy C-Charlie D-David E-Edward F-Frank G-George H-Henry I-Ida J-John K-King L-Larry M-Mike N-Nora O-Ocean P-Peter Q-Queen R-Robert S-Sam T-Thomas U-Union V-Victor W-William X-Xray Y-Yankee Z-Zebra. Since there are more than one ESU Rep on the road from each truck this how they are identified for the dispatcher.

OCD = Office of the Chief of Department. The DCU is overseen by the Chief.

Besides the 10 MAIN ESS (Emergency Service Squads) there are 2 more "BIG" trucks Truck 11 is at the ESU School on Floyd Bennett Field and Also there is TRUCK 12. 12 is a HAZ MAT responce truck. I think both get staffed as needed for BIG Stand By events.



Also when I have spoken to some Officers they all stated that the staffing changes day to day at each ESS. The staffing is the BIG TRUCKS get 2 Man ALL THE TIME (FIRST - Priority) after that the REPs get staffed with 2 P.O.'s each.

These are correct for many agencies, aviation and military, however the below mentioned alternative phonetics are fairly widely used in law-enforcement.



The agency I dispatch for, and just about every police agency in Wisconsin uses:



A- Adam

B- Boy (some times Baker)

C- Charles

D- David

E- Edward

F- Frank

H- Henry

I- Ida

J- John

K- King

L- Lincoln

M- Mary

N- Nora

O- Ocean

P- Paul

After 8 years in the Army it was pretty hard to break myself of the military phonetics and go to the "police" ones.

I think the disconnect here is, one phonetic alphabet is generally accepted as "military alphabet" the other is "police alphabet". Heck, in my area, the FD uses one, the PD uses the other. they are about as "standard" as 10-codes... <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_crazy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
