Portland Water Rescue 1-29-13
#1
Shortly after 1800 Portland dispatched Engine 29, Truck 7 and Battalion

Chief 3 to investigate a report of someone stranded on an island in

Johnson Creek. Contact with the caller confirmed there were two people

on the island asking for help to get back to the shore. They were a homeless couple living in a tent on the small island. They had been able to wade across two or three days ago, but they could not return because

of rising water from rainfall.

The swift water rescue team from the adjacent city of Gresham was asked

to respond with their inflatable boat along with Portland Dive Team members. Portland has a similar boat but it is on the opposite end of the city and Gresham was much closer.

That part of Johnson Creek is not very wide, but quite deep and fast flowing with the heavy rainfall. Two members of the Portland Dive Team entered the creek upstream and floated down to the island. Then the boat was taken across at a narrow spot and removed the two people.

They were offered shelter, but refused. The photos are self explanatory.
