Here we go I just saw on the news that Ladder 15's Pierce aerial malfunctioned and extended on it's own last night, requiring the aerial to be sawed off about 15 feet from the tip to rectify the situation. I don't think you'll see another new Pierce in the city (Rescue 1 excepted) for a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time!

Ed, can you elaborate on that at all? Or is that exactly what happened, middle of the night and the aerial just extended? and how old is the 15's? (if you know)

I only know what I saw on the news, which was Rescue 1 cutting the aerial. The story is pretty much what thtalking head said verbatim. They had to call in a flatbed to properly stabilize it for cutting. Ladder 15 is a 2004 Pierce Dash 105 foot RMA (85-90 foot now )

Didn't that happen in the 80s (+/-) with an E\-One aerial? I remember a fire school instructor telling us about it in the early 90s, how Boston had the only 96 ft aerial in existance (because of the cutting). Never saw a picture, and only heard that story the one time, but it makes me curious.

That was an issue of Boston using equipment the way they always did. The new E-Ones had aluminum aerials, where everthing modern before it was steel. Boston was known for agressively using the aerials to vent buildings, going through a window and up through the roof. They did this with one of the E-Ones, and burnt/melted a 4 foot section off of the end. Training had to inservice everyone about the limitations of the new aerials, and E\-One replaced the last fly, so there was never really a 96 foot aerial. The aerial was never cut, and it wasn't the result of a malfunction.

Wow Ed...That is some news about the Pierce doing that.It will be interesting to hear more about it.I always liked the old E\-One ladders that Boston operated,Do you happen to know why E\-One quit producing them? I wonder if E\-One will work with BFD and come up with something along those lines again for them.

You can still by Steel ladders. At least I know of ONE.

I believe that all 110' aerials now come on dual rear axles, which makes them a bit cumbersome for Boston. Federal weight regs may force them into using them though, as it has all but been publicly announced that the next ladders will be E\-One.

Sounds to me that they should be looking at what happened to the ladder the last time it was used. ladders just dont fail for no reason no matter who makes them. I think boston should stop using Pierce they seem to do and say what ever its going to take to get back to E\-One anyway.
