Found this Ward LaFrance on the side of the road on Route 40 (The Golden Mile) in Frederick, MD

Spotted this one a couple of weeks ago in a used car lot at Va State Route 10 and I-295 while on the way to work , stopped the next decent weather day we had and grabbed a few pictures.

Sorry about the quality on these...I was kind of rushing as I ha to get to work finally, the interior. And yes it's for sale...to the tune of $90,000.

I had the same thought, but The safety coordinator for the plant where I worked went up to take a look at it for the brigade (The 40year old Mack CF thay had...a former Chesterfield County rig...blew a cylinder head the other week)...he and a couple of other people are the ones I got the 90 grand figure from. I also heard 60,000 from one person but the higher figure is the one that I heard the most. I also wondered if they heard wrong and the owner of the lot actually said nine thousand, which would be more believable...but again I heard 90,000 too often for someone not to have said it.

 

I am going to do a little more research, though...it's no way he's going to get a tenth that for that rig.

I assume these are worth more cut up then to be given to needy depts?

NYC gives nothing away.  It is for sale at an auction.  I guess a lot of departments feel it is not worth it any more to buy a piece of apparatus that was beaten into the ground for 10+ years, and would need a serious rebuild to continue to operate in a safe fashion.

Depending on what you pay for the rig at the auction, a complete rebuild is still cheaper then purchasing a new one. If you use a glider kit, you could probably get away with a usable, up to date unit for about $700k. I am not sure exactly what a new one runs but I am sure it is a million or so.

Remounts of Scopes which include new cab/chassis, body, and complete aerial/outriggers/hydraulics rebuild and updated to current standards for just a little more than half of a new one. 3 mfgs that I know of have programs for scopes and they are roughly about the same price. The price doesn't include the cost of a donor rig.

FWIW, the F.D.N.Y. maintains its gigantic fleet pretty well. They are PM'ed quite frequently and I still think we have some decent mechanics as well. So while these rigs do run, most of the wear and tear is more cosmetic, IMO. Buy one @ an auction, and refurb it as is. Unless you have a blown engine, pump, tranny, rear(s), messed up boom or aerial or a bent frame, they should hold up pretty well for a few more years like the Macks did. That may be even cheaper. Again, JMO.
