I'm not 100% sure, but I believe this was the one that went to the Gates Fire District.  My Pirsch list shows a 1984 delivery of a Model CAN8 110' rearmount.  The last Rochester rig on the list is the 1972 TDA.

Here's a shot of the Gates Pirsch from my collection. Pump on only one side?  Different warning lights on the front. Same truck?

Thanks for adding the pic, John.  Definitely not the same rig.  The Gates rig has the Skytop 110' aerial and doesn't have a pump like the other one does.  At this point, I have no clue about the rig flashover71 posted.  Guess I'll just shut up and go sit in a corner.....

a friend of mine on the rfd said it was out of truck 9 but i know that isnt so, the last rig truck 9 had was a grumman with a 100' fire spire aerial and no pump, so we are butting heads over that one, and someone else said it ran out of truck 11 in charlotte for a very short period but i dont remember that either, they used the ward la france quint till they got the E\-One quint.

I was up in rochester for thanksgiving week not much action and the didn't get many photos due to the fact that most of the rfd was running reserves but i was able to catch one run on evergreen st.

Quote:You're right.  I'm not taking shots against who's calling the shots or who's in charge, but I am still a believer in the Quint/Midi concept that Lennie Huether developed.

Granted, Sam Mitrano was appointed Chief last year and the first thing the new mayor did this year was let him go.  One of the biggest problems I saw occurred when our now Lt Governor was Mayor.  I'm a firm believer that the Quint Midi concept was Huether's way of keeping firehouses open.

As for the advantages of Quints versus TDA's, I can honestly say that I don't know the advantages and disadvantages and never will based on the fact that I come from a rural department.  As for the Midi's versus Engines??  We don't use Midi's, but when I was a line officer, I was responsible of ordering a new Mini pumper with a large pump on it, so I can see the value of Midi's in an urban setting.

The bottom line is we all come from different areas, and we all have different jobs.  In Philadelphia it's all about the TDA's.  When you go into the Adirondack area of NY you have departments that operate with mini pumpers and tankers, while the rest of us work with anything and everything in between.  The bottom line is that we all have to work within the personnel, facilities and budgets that we have to work with.

Sometimes we can't comprehend what the resources and needs for their communities are.  Other times you have a Chief who may be a total idiot, another Chief comes in and has to clean up a mess and get things on the right track.  In other cases you might have a good chief get replaced due to politics and replaced by someone who tried to re-invent the wheel and try to fix something that isn't broken.

As for Rochester's Quint/Midi concept, time will tell and the numbers will speak for themselves.  The only problem is if the change was wrong, it's going to cost a lot of time and money to fix it.

I think the one problem we all have is that it has taken many years to reap the benefits of fire codes and fire prevention to do what they were intended to do.  The problem now is that after all of those years, our local government leadership has become complacent and decided to make cuts in the fire service.  The problem is once these cuts occur, it's going to come at a high price, and it's going to take a long time to correct it.

Very well said and your right the cost will be high in lives and dollars.

I agree I seen the changes from engine and truck to quint and midi and back, I always thought Len Huther was a innovator, and he knew that he had to do more for less and it worked. Now after being away from rochester for 5 years I seen the way the reorganization screwed the city up, for example truck companies were reduced from 9 to 6 so now you have a further distance for a truck Co to have to respond to. Taking a truck Co out of Charlotte was not planned right cause it takes truck 2 about 5 to 7 minutes more to get the first in truck Co, and depending on the weather conditions could take longer. Now I would have kept a truck there especially since there are 2 high rises not even a quarter mile from quarters with one being across the street, and a large nursing home about a mile and a half away. With the quint/midi system there was a truck in every section of the city.

Old truck 2 sitting in a junkyard in bergen ny I wanted to get the front end to do my bar but the guy wanted almost a thousand dollars, and wanted four hundred for head and warning light bezels.
