Changeable Unit/Rig Numbers
#1
Hey all, looking for ideas for being able to rotate our rigs but keep the number the same as the station.

There are a few out ways out there, from the $$$$ (BEMS old system) to the simple.

Can you guys supply some pictures and ideas?

Thanks!

For many years, the Syracuse Fire Department has used a simple aluminum channel frame in the shape of a square "U" on the doors of apparatus used as spares. Each station is assigned a set of numbers on aluminum blanks for their station which simply slide into the frame. These numbered blanks stay at the station. Whenever a spare shows up, the guys simply drop their number into the door slot, and they're all set. It's quick, economical to do, and there's no reason why it couldn't be expanded to every rig in the fleet if desired. Renumbering any rig to your station would only take seconds. You could paint the aluminum blanks to match your apparatus color to make it a bit more aesthetically pleasing, and do the numbers in whatever font and color you use now.Just a suggestion.

There are numerous photos of SFD Spare & Recall Apparatus on Fire Photographer John Kanealy's excellent CNYfiretrucks web site. They show the aluminum frame I'm talking about on the rear doors, and also the fact that the spares are individually identified by smaller lettering on the tops of the front cab doors so you know at a glance who's using what.

It works for us.

Code R decals out of California makes some really nice, magnetic, and interchangeable panels. I don't know about cost though. We used plexiglass or lexan panels, painted. You can spray paint them if somebody is handy with a rattle can who has a steady hand, and buy numbers to stick on from any decal company who can give the right font, shadowing etc.. Then we would slide the panel into the aluminum channeling and remove or replace as needed. Aluminum channeling was fairly simple and low cost. Easy to attach to the apparatus. But to each they're own. Depends on what your willing to spend, and adopt as your own.

Chief is the rescue still using the 135' Eone or is it an active company now? I went to the above site and it now shows it painted red and truck 1.

The 1985 E\-One 135' aerial is still in the fleet. Formerly designated as the Rescue Truck, and assigned to SFD Rescue 1, it has been reassigned to the Squad Company and re-designated as Ladder 1. It was repainted red some time ago, but still responds from Station 1 on South State Street.
