The City of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada's capital city, operates a large number of tankers. Due to the extremely large geographical size of the city, the vast majority of the land is very rural. Although the population of the city approaches 1,000,000 with most of those in a dense urban environment, there are 16 rural fire stations manned by volunteers, with an additional 4 stations housing career and volunteers together. These 4 stations are on the periphery of the urban/rural divide. 25 stations house career members only, with 2 of those having tanker apparatus assigned.
