Crown Fire apparatus began back in 1951. The company was then a bus maker and evolved into making fire trucks.

Not too many out there but does anyone know where the name "Brockway" came from? I had heard that they were an independent manufacturer of large trucks and then were bought out by Mack in the early '70's or so.

Named for the company founder, William N. Brockway. If you google "Brockway Trucks" you'll find the complete company history at the Brockway Truck Museum site. We see a lot of old Brockways around here, the old Cortland, NY plant is just 20 miles or south of us and many of their later trucks are still on the road.

Grumman: named for its founder.

P.E. Vanpelt: Named after its founder. (Oakdale, CA)
FMC (once the Food Machinery Corperation): They built food related machinery before getting into the fire apparatus and armored fighting vehicle buisness. Started out as the Bean Spray Pump Company (named after John Bean) making piston pumps. (Originally San Jose, CA).
Burton's fire: named after the two brothers that founded the company. (Modesto, CA)

Westates & West-Mark: because they are located in the west? (Davis, CA & Ceres, CA)
Hi-Tech Emergency Vehicle Services: sounds good? (Oakdale, CA)

Mack Trucks, began as a design and manufacture of heavy duty commerical vehicles, trucks and buses in the early 1900's. The first Mack named fire apparatus came about in 1911 and was a pumper.

Mack was the family name of the brothers (Jack and Gus) who founded the company in 1900.

Bob,
I knew it was a family name but wasn't sure about the names of the brothers, so I didn't post anything torward that. I guess I could have said the "MACK BROTHERS" or used your's and my first names with their last!!!

Grumman Aeronautical Engineering was founded by Leroy Grumman in 1930. After purchasing Howe Fire Apparatus in 1976, they officially entered the fire apparatus business.
Humphrey and Dudley Pierce have no relation to George N. Pierce.

I actually know one, I think. Spartan fire equipment is located in Charlotte Mi which is located just south of East Lansing, home of Michigan State University/ The Spartans.

IIRC, Pierce Fire Apparatus bought the naming rights to the Pierce Arrow, and obviously applied it to their line of apparatus.

Actually the original Thibault plant (founded by Pierre Thibault) was in Pierreville. After that company went bankrupt, four of his sons opened Pierreville Fire Trucks in St-Francois du Lac, which is just across the river. Then Pierre Thibault Company was resurrrected, then it was bought by Pierreville, then they went bankrupt again and came back for a while as Nova Quintech. Meanwhile, some of the remaining family members started-up Phoenix Fire Trucks up the river in Drummondville. There was also ThiboTrac operated by another faction of the family.
Carl Thibault (3rd generation) now assembles apparatus the original Thibault plant in Pierreville. The CET plant (named for one of the sons -- Charles-Etienne Thibault) is just down the street. Jean Thibault is a Pierce dealer in Drummondville. Techno-feu, the E\-One dealer, is located in St-Francois du Lac, as well as Levasseur, a small local apparatus assembler.

just to add to what you wrote... LaFrance fire engine co. was started by Truckson LaFrance....American Fire Engine Co. was comprised of many smaller apparatus builders of the time..only one I can think of off the top of my head was the Silsby steam fire engine Co....
