I ran into a snag on getting insurance, or it would already be in my driveway. A solution has been found and I should be driving it home next week. I to had tryed to contact john at ward la france .com with no luck, met him at 2005 at SYARCUSE but agian never herd from him agian. maybe with these posts someone will get to him. he holds a lot of our ward's info. also have used J.C. TAYLOR . STARTED IN 1978 AND NEVER HAD ANY TROUBLE WITH THEM , AGAIN GOOD LUCK .

Question on the insurance. I too went thru JC Taylor and just got my insurance info and I got moved to Foremost Insurance Co. I need to find out what happened. Anyone go thru this?? I cant complain as my insurance is $108.00 and a one time Fla. exempt regist.
The issue I was having with getting my truck insured has been resolved. I got a phone call from Condon & Skelly (Maple Shade, NJ) on Monday afternoon letting me know of the approval. I should have the cards tomorrow. The coverage amounts are excellent and the premium is much lower than those reported in this thread. I appreciate all the suggestions given to me in this matter. Thanks!
Dave- I have my insurance through Condon & Skelly, you wont be dissapointed, they have been a pleasure to work with the 5 years I have owned my rig. Better rates than JC Taylor, too.
Just an update on the P-8D. It is currently sitting in the front yard with an electrical problem causing the almost brand new battery to go dead. Not yet sure if it is the alternator or the voltage regulator. I won't be able to determine which is causing the problem until I get the battery charged up and get it running again. It's 34 degrees and that doesn't help either. Anyway, here are a few shots taken today. Looks better now with the tires pumped up!
Dave, it appears that the rear axle on your truck has single rear wheels, if so that is kind of rare! I can't say I have ecer seen that on a truck that big.

That is true, only four tires on my rig. All Air Force P-8's were like that. The tires are wider than those found on a typical apparatus. The 4 wheel drive probably has a lot to do with it too.
It also kept spare wheel and tire storage to a minimum. All AF Fire Departments are reqired to have a mounted spare tire for each type of vehicle assigned to it at the fire station. Ga Dave, I still havent talked to the guy that worked at WRAFB about the truck yet, but I will keep you posted.

This is one sharp truck. Hope you get the electrical issue resolved quickly. I just had my alternator rebuilt ( bad diodes ). Keep the pictures coming !!! Frank
Turns out the alternator was shot, so I'll pick up the new one tomorrow. Here's a couple more shots I took this afternoon, showing both sides of the motor (minus the alternator), the jumpseat area from either side (sorry about the sun!), and the officer's side of the interior. I have been having difficulties with lowering the cab. The cab lift is a manual jack. It takes about 5 minutes to lift it up, but when it's released, it takes 30-35 minutes to come back down. This afternoon, I located a small screw in the jack that has a check valve inside. The valve was stuck, so I cleaned it and now the cab comes down in about 3 minutes!

Dave, if your looking for insurance for the truck, there is a place call Condon and Skelly in Maple Shade, NJ. The insurance is specially for antiques. They would required some photos and a address where the truck would be stored and tell them it would be stored inside. You can drive the truck 2500 mile each year. Which is a lot for a truck even if you hitting a lot of parades and events. My mechanic would love to have that kind of engine access ( tilt cab ). You are the 4th person, myself included, who have had alternator's replaced in their rigs just within the past couple of weeks.
The new alternator has been installed and I've been working on the cab lift hydraulics. The cab now comes back down in about 5 minutes, instead of 30! On to the air leak. It's coming from the main valve below the brake pedals. There is an exhaust at the bottom of the valve and it leaks there. Anyone know how to repair/rebuild this type of valve or would I be farther ahead just replacing it?
The new alternator solved the charging problem. It's now putting out the correct 14.5v that it should. Next step is fixing the air leak and getting all the headlights, brakelights, and turn signals to work. Also, there are 5 holes in the cab roof where the lightbar was mounted, four for the bolts and one for the wiring harness. I'm not going to put that bar back on, I'm looking for an original Federal Visibar, but in the meantime, I need to plug those holes. Any suggestions?
Dave: Is the brake pedal a Bendix? If so, get the numbers off of it, and give TRENTON BRAKES, in Trenton NJ a call. Google their number and if you cant find it give me a PM or email, I have it somewhere. They specialize in older brake systems, and have many bendix rebuild kits in stock. They even have stainless steel sleeves (with lifetime warranties) for most master cylinders and slave cylinders. They were real good people to me. They will take your credit card over the phone and ship the parts to you. If they dont have a rebuild kit, perhaps they have a complete new unit in stock. Give any truck parts house a try- just have the numbers of the parts before you call them, or take the assembly with you if you go to the counter.
As for the holes in the cab, will you be leaving them or do you want to eliminate them? If you are keeping them try to find some Monkey ****, also called Electricians Dope. Like a thick clay or play-doh. Should be able to find it at most electrical supply houses. Buy some of that and stuff it in the holes.
And Bain172, if big dumb knuckle-dragging trucky knew how to read, you would have seen in a previous post that I already gave Dave the info on Condon and Skelly and he in turn went to them and got insurance. Now go break more windows, oh wait, Ladder 1 doesnt get to go to fires when you are working........You get to stay in quarters and eat bananas!!!!! UGH UGH UGH!!!! ME TRUCKY! ME BREAK $HIT!

Nothing new to report, just wanted to save the thread from deletion. Several unexpected financial obligations have prevented any progress on the P-8D. Hopefully, things will calm down a bit in 2008 and I'll have some money to spend on it.
