Here are some more pics of the Pierce Arrow XT pumpers that should soon be delivered. They were all taken at the factory as positioning and light allowed, so they are not all that great. I am not sure if these were taken by the same consulting firm or some of our guys up there doing an inspection.



As I understand it, after these are delivered there will be 3 more that begin construction. 2 of the 3 will have the Husky Foam pro system and are slated to go to E20 and E14, both in Battalion 3. Maybe I can get the other one!!!! (but I doubt it)

Two firsts for Memphis about the pump panels. First engines ever equipped with speed lays and it looks like they went with "true" lil ladders. You know the kind we have on our trucks from 50 years ago that you can take apart and make an "A" frame, extend together, or make 2 small straight ladders - at any rate, they are stored in a transverse compartment high on the rear of the pump panel accessed from both sides - viewable in 2nd pic below.

The last batch of apparatus had to be cut back due to budget restraints, so Engine 42 did not get a new pumper like they were supposed to.

I think Memphis will be happy with the new Pierce pumpers and Rescue. We've been a all Pierce dept. since 1975 and have been very well pleased. Our last purchase was a Pierce Custom Contender in 04. We did have some minor engine trouble, but this was due to a defect with the 400 Cummins engines for that model year. Nothing to do with Pierce. We actually bought the first Pierce in the state of Mississippi in 1975 and I believe the first top mount control built by Pierce. I will be anxious to see how the guys feel about the Pierce pumpers in relation to the E\-One's.

I would have to sit down and really look at the spec, but I can't help but believe that we could get the hose bed lower. These are MUCH better than the last batch of E\-One's, but I think we could get them even lower. Putting the ladders on a rack instead of through the rear would probably allow that to happen.



If I had my way, I would do away with crosslays and put the pre-connects coming off of the back. That would most likely make the pumpers pull past the house on fire and park where they are supposed to. As is, Drivers try to line the crosslays up with the front door.



As long as they are plumbing the front bumper, I would run it with 2 1/2" pipe and end it with a gated wye. The labor would be the same and the material cost would not be that much more. The discharge would count as a 250 gpm discharge for ISO and if you ever needed 2 lines or a 2 1/2" off of the front, you would have that option.



I would have spec'ed a deck gun that is usable 360 degrees around the apparatus. A simple pin in 18" extension pipe would do the trick.



I would not have paid for the cab mounted water level lights. Sure their nice if your on a volunteer department and have your only 2 or 3 guys inside that need to be able to tell from the house how much water they have left, but that will NEVER happen here. We always have a pump operator. I am sure I could have found something else to use with that money, like a real siren.



I would eliminate the "NightFighter" and halogen rear deck lights and gone with (4) pole mounted HID lights.



I would have included a brow light.



I like the booster up top and the extra compartment in the rear.



Not sure how the standard west coast mirrors are going to work out. They are certainly less expensive, but riding on R3 yesterday the Driver told me the passenger side mirror might as well be non-existent.



Bear in mind, I do not know where the money cap was. Many of these items could have been discussed and not purchased due to that cap. I am sure they did the best they could with what they had to work with. As stated, as long as these hold up, they should be hands down the best pumpers in the fleet.



Again, KUDOS to the apparatus committee and retired Lt. Jeff Kuntz who is now the local Pierce dealer.

Oh, two more things:



Rear chevron safety striping and some kind of beefed up rear directional bar on the rear. We had 3 pumpers rear ended on the interstate in one day this last week. Yes it was icy, maybe it would not have made a difference, but it wouldn't hurt either.

Ive sene many VFD's using them, only big city FD I know that uses them is Detroit, its standard on all their new Pierces.

Was the E\-One for 42's re-assigned or never delivered and remained at the factory? Was this part of the order of pumpers and trucks that was reduced mid-order and some sold to other departments?

If I'm not mistaken, it never left the factory and got sold to another department along with a couple of trucks.

The new pumpers look great. I see one is marked E60. Where will this company go?



We are fixing to spec out a new pumper to replace E2, an 89 Pierce Arrow. We have been told it WILL have a 1" reel and a Q! After we take delivery of that one we will spec out a new quint to replace the truck I ride (T3), a 92 E\-One. I've already put my request in for a Q as well! If you can't tell, I'm jonesn' over the Q!

E 60 rides out of the 55's house right now along with E-55, T-27, SCFD E-63 and a memphis unit ( not sure the number) I talked to a guy from the 63s the other day and he said that place is CROWDED!!! I think they are supposed to build a new house for E60 but I am not sure, I am sure the MFD guys can tell ya. So yall are gonna have a pumper with a booster huh, that must be nice!!!
