A little bird told me there would be three additional pumpers. Three E\-One ladders are on order. There will be no Pierce ladders any time in the near future.

Thanks, so they are the Hale Q-Max if they are 1500GPM? We've looked at the PUC and it is a very nice design but not what we are looking for.

Robert, if they put the hydraulic ladder rack on the drivers side, then it would really be in their way of it was lower down. No since in creating a hazard for the operator as there is already one with the cross lays they have to dodge at the pump panel. Plus the ladder rack be an accident to happen, should it is lowered in traffic or not allow other apparatus to pass by on some streets.



One of the first things that the apparatus committee and powers to be has to decide upon is what we want in a Pumper or Aerial Truck. Next is what and where are we going to place the various tools and appliances, to make the rig as simplistic as possible. No sense in reinventing the wheel.



I have never been in favor of cross lays, unless they only come off the right side and not over or near the operator’s side. If you can spec a pumper and have the preconnects attack lines off the rear, you are far better off as the pumper came proceed just past the address and members can put the lines from the rear to the incident. There will always be pros and cons for the placement of preconnected hand lines.



One thing that the photo that Wagonman posted is that the dividers can be moved or removed. If you are carrying 1000 feet of LDH, i.e. 5 inch or even 4 inch, then that is the main hose bed that is configured. Then you add what ever else that you desire. If you want to carry 500 feet of 2-1/2 inch hose in a dead load, with a nozzle attached and then have two 1-3/4 inch preconnected hose lines, it should be plenty of room for that. Most dealers as well as manufacturers will work closely with the departments to achieve what they want and need. If you make a radical change in design, the manufacturers must re tool their operation to make a few of one of a kinds. In other words don’t’ vary off too much and run the cost up for each piece.

Short answer is yes.



The long answer:



The three trucks that were just completed and delivered are going to T12, T17, and T22. That will leave T6 and T21 in tillers. When the next 3 are delivered, they will of coarse go to T6 and T21 and the third will replace someone who is already in a rearmount. This will put the first E\-One 100' rearmount in reserve status.

Having said that, 99.9% of the time, ladders are placed on these engines only because they are required by ISO and NFPA. On the slight occasion that an engine company actually used a ladder, the rack could be put back up instead of leaving it down. Traffic would be the last of my concerns - we shut it down. Apparatus getting by could be an issue, but I do not think very often. On the passenger side you either have to position to let the rack come down, completely blocking the street or do without the ladders. To build on what John said concerning dividers, in many places the dividers between pre-connects are only half the height as the dividers seperating supply line. Someone needs to start a hose bed/load thread.

I noticed in the 2008 CIP budget that Memphis has included $328,000 to repair a damaged aerial truck and $198,000 to repair a damaged pumper. I am assuming that these are the rigs that used to be assigned to T3 and E55?



I also noticed that they have 7 medical SUVs, 9 ambulances, and 10 SUVs in the budget.



It should be a good year for the MFD fleet.

You're right on the allocations, but I'm not sure all of those expendatures are actually going to be made this year. I feel good about the SUV's since the sedans are really racking up the miles. I know we are having "issues" with the current ambulance vendor and I doubt we will be buying any before FY2009 (which begins July 1). You are right on about T3 and E55, but I'm don't know if work will begin on either of those before FY2009, either.



Chief Ludwig might shine more light, if he is so inclined or disposed.

Barry et al,



Our shop manager told em the other day that E55 and T3 should be going back to E\-One within a month or two. He had the contract for the SUV's on his desk and stated that (I think) an additional 30 had been approved by the council after the delivery of the first batch.



I know it seems like alot, especially if you are from a smaller department, but the city literally buys hundreds of cars a year between the fire and police departments alone. Us getting over 30 cars or in the future SUV's will not be uncommon.



We did not speak about the units, but I think the 9 for this year are the ones that would replace the rest of the white units to red. They better award it to someone. Unit 8 has been in a red unit for 6 or 7 months now and has right at 100,000 miles.

AS I understand it, they are talking about kidding rid of ALL cars and purchasing nothing but SUV's in the future.



The EMS Lt's and BC are getting Expedition XL's, fire BC's are getting Explorers.



Don't ask, I can't figure it out either.

I actually contributed to the specification process when I was riding EMS LT last January. Before I explain the reasoning, I'd love to hear how its a slap in the face.

I think its just the impression it gives that EMS Lt's are getting the "nicer, larger" vehicle as opposed to BC's. To be honest, I wish they were all getting the larger vehicles as well. I think they "fit" into the fleet better and would be safer in an accident. I actually wish they would have looked at Tahoe's. The ones the police just got are SWEET!!



Many of the BC's that I have talked to said if they have to get out of the car, they'd rather have a crew cab pick up. I think that would be good as well. Definitely more versatile.



As I understand it, the new pumpers are in town. Well kind of, at Pro-Fire in Olive Branch. I may try to get some pics tomorrow.

The EMS Lieutenants carry a large amount of equipment therefore the larger SUV is needed. In our car currently both the backseat and trunk are loaded down. It would be great if we are all in the same SUV's but I would assume money was a big factor. Kory hoped this gave a better insight of the situation.

These are the latest of the 3 identical Pierce Arrow XT pumpers. Engines 30 and 42 are in town at G&W Diesel, a partner company of Pro-Fire, the local Pierce dealer. E60 is in Tuscolusa, AL at the Alabama Firefighters or Fire Chiefs Conference.
