History of the Atlanta Fire Dept.
[quote name='maxim' post='191799' date='Feb 25 2008, 16:41 ']"Big Red" Originally assigned to Ladder 8 when it was on Carnegie Way downtown, where the Peachtree Plaza--Westin is now.

Sweetest sounding fire truck I have heard in 54 years on this earth. It was at L-23 when I lived in Atlanta, and it made every major fire in the city, or at least transferred to 11 (check old "HOt News"). Ask Capt. Gish and Dave Williams, I am sure they will concur.

I have pictures and slide, so I can't be of much help with a posting. Would love to see some shots of it

OHHHHHH, OK Great! When GA DAVE mentioned that it was a TDA, it dawned on me that it might have been "Big Red" that you have mentioned before. I have an in-house shot of it, but it is not a real good shot. Since I'm back at 23, I'd love to get a good shot of it and maybe make a copy and post it at the firehouse....

There is an incident at CNN Center and the Omni Hotel with numerous minor injuries and debris. There is so much going on that i can hardly keep up with the traffic. ALL AFD companies are in action. Station 4 at Edgewood seems to be the central staging point.

An F1, possibly F2 tornado stuck the central Downtown district tonight. Atlanta/Ful. Co. EOC is in full operation, command post/staging at Station 4. Curfew is in effect, and nearly all of downtown is locked down/streets closed, all interstate ramps into downtown are closed at this time. Some minor looting reported by APD, APD and GSP are coordinating with multiple agencies as well.

Minor structural damage to GA dome, GWCC (Convention Center) the incident at 170 Blvd SE at old Fulton Cotton Mill Lofts, 5th floor pancaked onto 4th floor with NO major casualties. Omni hotel at CNN center is closed, nearly half of glass windows are blown out, similar damage at all other buildings downtown.

SEC basketball tourney moved to GA Tech.

Another round of severe weather is expected to arrive in early AM.

Made a quick (really quick) Google map of some of the reported damage.

Gradymedic,

Excellent addition with the map. Gives a real perspective on the damage area and details for each specific location. Thank you for the extra effort in doing it.

Operations are starting to wind down in Atlanta. House to house searches were conducted in Cabbagetown (near Cotton Mill Lofts) and Vine City (Near GA Dome). Downtown is still pretty much locked down. GMAG Mutual Aid companies are still operating in the city. DeKalb's dog team was VERY helpful and were coordinated with the GSAR teams.

At 4PM another tornado producing storm passed through Atlanta. All companies were ordered to sound their sirens (we don't have tornado sirens in Fulton County) and return to quarters to take cover. Fortunately, it moved through quickly and no damage has yet been reported.

I'm on duty at CPFD #2. We've had uncomfirmed reports of another hotel downtown Atlanta getting hit hard and the East Point MARTA station being hit. Anyone else heard anything about this?

Station 1 is not sitting alone anymore now that new condos are sprouting up next door. Here Battalion 2, 6, 5 an 3 meet at station 1 with Division 1. Whats up with the white Chevy Suburbans?

Another piece of Atlanta History has been made. Captain George R. Gish III retired yesterday after 28 plus years of dedicated service. "Good Luck" and enjoy your retirement Bob.

I sure miss the Atlanta fire musters of the early 90's. I have some old shots from around that time somewhere.

Effective March 19, 2008 Fire Station 18 at 2007 Oakview Rd. SE will be relocated to a temporary trailer next to 25 Warren St SE. The firehouse built in 1940 will soon be demolished. A new firehouse 18 will be erected on the same site after demolition and will take about 8 months for construction to be completed once they start. This picture shows a vacant firehouse with Warning sign posted and the bronze dedication plaques removed. Kind of sad to see some history leaving but all in the name of progress.
