Virginia apparatus - miscellaneous
|
I had the opportunity to travel this past week to areas around Lynchburg and Danville, Virginia. Fortunately, the weather was good but I did work hard to get people to the stations because some were closed up tight.
Just outside of Lynchburg is Concord, Virginia, located in Campbell County. No one was home and I thought things would go great when I saw a car at a house behind the fire station with fire department tags. Unfortunatley, he did not work at Concord, but a neighboring station. However, he had contacts and soon someone was on the way. Every person I met during my trip was extremely nice and accomodating. Concord operates a variety of apparatus. First up is Concord's newest - Engine 1. Concord, VA Campbell County Engine 1 2007 Pierce Arrow XT 1500/750 job # 18469 Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA

The newer Pierce at Concord replaces old Engine 1, a 1980 Ford C900/Gumman FireCat/Howe 1000/1200. It has Howe serial number 16121 and is for sale.

Correction on the water tank on the 1980 Ford C - I was told 1,000 gallons.
Engine 2 is a bit unusual at Concord - a 1991 Mack MC/Grumman FireCat with a 1250/1250. It has Grumman serial number 18662-FC. M&W, a Virginia fire truck builder, did some rehab work on the Mack approximately 10 years ago after an accident. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA

I forgot to mention on Engine 2 that the silver box on top of the hose bed is a hose bed cover, and not an extra large tank.
Concord operates two tankers, and both are International's built by M&W. Tanker 2 1999 International 4900/M&W 500/1375 Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA

Similar in appearance but with less water is Tanker 3, a 1995 international 4900/M&W 500/1250.

In addition to the two brush trucks, Virginia Forestry has one of their Hummers stationed at the Concord VFD, where several members of Concord are employed by Virginia forestry.

The last truck run by Concord is Squad 13, a 1986 Chevrolet Kodiak/Hackney that once was a Pepsi delivery truck.

The Concord Volunteer Rescue Squad is located next to the fire station. In addition to a variety of ambulances, the rescue squad runs Rescue 4R1, a 1998 International 4700/Boardman.

Another Campbell County fire station is Altavista, which also runs a variety of interesting apparatus from a fire station that once was a Food Lion grocery store.
First up at Altavista is Engine 1, a 1998 Pierce Lance 1500/1000/30/50 with job number EC043. What is interesting about this Pierce is that the pump panel controls are found within the cab, similar to apparatus found in Minnesota and other cold states. I have photographed a lot of apparatus over the years - this is my first with the pump panel in the cab. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA

Tech 10 at Altavista is one of my favorites during this trip. The Fire Chief at Altavista said that everyone likes this truck when they visit.
Tech 10 is a HAZMAT/Mass Casualty unit and is a 1969 Ford C/Baker. It was purchased from the Citizens Rescue Squad in Gladys, Virginia where it was painted white with an orange stripe. Mike Sanders Ashburn, VA

Fire Department members did a lot of in-house work to complete Attack 5. The 2000 Ford F550 has a body built by Truck Body and is equipped with a 300/300/15.
