Why does the siren have a cover over the speaker? I noticed this alot on FDNY Macks. The ALF's had a triangle in the center. Just interested.

There was a time, not so long ago, when the "citizens" of certain inner-city neighborhoods would unscrew the speaker cones...the metal grills over the speaker, whether a triangle or disc, solved this problem.
No, it is a company specific thing. Some of the companies personalize their rigs, like adding an extra stripe or adding gold leaf lettering. Check out Mike Martinelli's site, [url="http://www.fdnytrucks.com/index.htm"]FDNYtrucks.com[/url] and you can see some of the other rigs.
whats the deal with the crazy light configurations on the top rear of battalion vehicles.. not sure if theyre still doing this.. if im not mistaken nypd had something simmilar..

If your talking about the FDNY's new Safety Battalion vehicle it's the new art deco look.
