[/quote] Does anyone know what happened to the Seagrave ladder that they collapsed? It was about 20 years ago. One guy was on the tip and was injured pretty badly. If you have ever seen the video "Aerial Error", the incident was featured in it.

Funny, The group I was with yesterday was just talking about that. The Firefighter did die from his injuries. As far as the Seagrave. It was converted into a rescue truck by the Croft, Sc FD. The said the Cab and chasis is now Somewhere in a field near Clemet Lumber co. in Spartanburg. Yes I am going to have to go seek it out.

I blamed the problem on the fact that Spartanburg was going into the Public Safety Officer program. The fire equipment and training were being neglected in favor of police training and police equipment. I was at their station one morning for equipment check. The "officer" assigned to that rig just started it up, turned on the lights and siren and then shut it down. He then went in and sat down and read a police magazine. I couldn't believe it! I was not that surprised when I heard about the collapse. I am sorry to hear about the fate of the guy. I knew that he was seriously injured. If I remember right, he was not long from retirement. He was a PSO, but I don't know if he had come from the fire or police side.

This is Ladder 2 for the City of Spartanburg. Ladder One is a Mid mount.
Capt "Red" Horton was not long from retirement. He was from the fire side. Great guy. He suffered for several years in a nursing home due to the head injuries suffered in the collapse. It happened on a business fire on Union St in the city of Sptbg. The ladder twisted as it collapsed causing Red to come off hitting the concrete lot below. I was working EMS that day not a good memory to recall.
Sorry to have brought up a bad memory. It's a shame that it ever happened. I hope that he and his family were treated fairly (re: PSOB) I spend a lot of time in Spartanburg. If I had known he was in a Nursing home, I would have tried to visit. We need to remember and analyze these incidents and be committed to preventing them from happening again in the future.
I was a PSO in North Myrtle Beach at the time. We were heading in the same direction. I was lucky enough to get out. I did not mean to hijack this thread. So with this... I would like to bring this discussion to an end. We could start a new thread if necessary. I am really enjoying "Crusin' Carolina". Thanks for the great shots...
Lets keep the theard going. Also one last note Sptbg trahed the PSO idea and they are back to a true FD. Also have a new Chief - Bill Ale. From MD(?) Great guy with some long overdue changes at his request to make the dept much better.
Gary are you going to post some more?

I knew that. well here is the real Spartanburg Ladder 1. An older pic. They since then, Spartanburg has replaced the bottom blue stripe with a red one on theire entire fleet. Possibly due to the new administration, I don't know. I thought it made them unique with the blue on the bottom. oh well.
Here is Spartanburgs former Ladder 1. I beleive this one replaced the Seagrave previously mentioneed. I was told that this truck went somewhere in Pensylvania. If anyone knows or has a pic of it in PA, Please post.
And last one for now. Ashley River former Engine 1. Now along the roadside of US 176n of Spartanburg at a landscaping shop.
Yes the stripe change was due to move from PSO back to pure FD. Also they just laid red over the blue. On the patrol cars they redid the whole package with all new stripes. Made the FD guys feel real good. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/doh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
dispachrg,
If you can find out where Spartansburg old ladder went I'll see if I can go get a picture for ya.
Glad to hear they are pure FD again. I visted during the Public Safety Days and wandered around Fire House One for a while. Finely I ran into a Public Safety Officer and he could not tell me anything about the Fire Units. Really sad, we have had a Three Public Safety Departments in the KC area. They are good at Police work but fire and ems always suffer. Two of them returned to Fire and Police Departments. Intresting concept and good cost saver on paper but for safety of personel, public it just does not make sense.
Stay Safe, <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/3_12_21.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
