Sorry, any time for note-taking was abruptly ended by a Museum staffer who invited me back behind the yellow line!

Wow, any more pics from the Mel's auction? I spent the weekend there watching the proceedings... more old iron in one place than I've seen before or since!

Howie, If wishes were horses then beggars would ride! I had my eyes on Engine 11's C-Mack, Cambridge's Rescue 1 CF/Gertie, and an ugly-as sin '58 GMC 860 tractor. Being a humble civil servant, though.......well you know the rest!

It was one of, if not the largest, collection of collectible trucks ever brought to auction in New England.

Any Firepixer's have one of Mel Clark's babies in their collection today??? Chime in, guys!!

I will look in my files, and post whatever I find! I was under time constraints on viewing day, and his collection covered two huge lots on both sides of route 1. I lost count of the number of great old iron I saw!

The rig in question is built on a 1929 Lincoln touring car chassis. The body was home built in Southern Pacific's Alhambra Shops in Los Angeles. This is also the same location where the rig was used before the Alhambra Shops where closed. The rig was moved a few miles over to the new Taylor Shop complex at Taylor Yard, also in Los Angeles. This rig was a hose wagon, no pump or tank. It was staffed by shop employees if and when the need arose which was very infrequently.

As it sits, the rig starts and runs. It is also complete. It is owned by the museum, it is not for sale. The priority for doing anything with it is between none and nil. I have poked at it a little over the years which is how I know what I know about it, I didn't just get it through osmosis. Sure, I'd take it on as a project but I already have enough of my own projects as it is and spending time on it would take away valuble time working on other things.

Regards,

Thanks PK! Great background on my mystery rig. There were so many rarities in the Back Lot, and some will be restored, yet some will die there.

I was travling back from VT on Oct 15 on Rte 89 and saw a dandy of a Tractor

trailer unit parked onthe South bound side near Exit 15, it was near same Whaletail road

sitting in the parking lot of a security company. I was not able to get close enough to get a make.

It was all red and appeared to be a ALF or Seagrave trailer unknown on the tractor.

Also on the same day I saw on Rte 28 in Hookset, 2 old Newport NH rigs, a Rearmount Seagrave

and a Pump, I think the RM is Ex-FDNY.

No Photos yet, Might have to go back to get more

Thanks for the correction! I'll plead "crappy Ebay pic" on that one!

Hope it sells to a fan, vs. tree trimmer or a drivetrain vulture.
