Love the little touches, guess that they are assigned these as take home units? The retro 1969 Charger emblems are cool.
Anyone know why they have a $60,000 charger r/t instead of the $25,000 police version?

$60,000? More like $36,000 for the R/T

May even be a police sedan with after-market R/T "add-ons". We played with the idea of dressing up our unmarked Charger like a R/T using parts available from an on-line catalog to make it more difficult to ID as a police unit, but left it "as-is". And BTW, those aren't R/T-spec wheels... those are the standard police steelies, not available with R/T packages (and why would you put those on a R/T anyway??). My guess is someone had some fun adding after-market parts to a police-spec Charger. It's very easy to do. Point in fact, although police-spec Chargers do not come through with "HEMI" emblems, all of our Chargers sport them, thanks to the Dodge dealership where our warranty work is done. In looking at those pictures, the only R/T-spec equipment visible to me is the "shaker" hood w/scoop, the small rear-deck spoiler, the chrome exhaust tips and the "R/T" emblems. All that stuff can be easily aquired and added on. It IS mean-looking though!!
I think you guys are confusing the R/T trim package with the SRT-8 Charger. The SRT-8 is the $60,000 Charger, but this one is a run of the mill Charger police package that someone added the hood, exhaust tips from an SRT-8 onto like Maxim has indicated. That little lip spoiler isn't what comes on either an R/T or an SRT-8...I think it belongs to the V-6 appearance package.
Whether it's a take home that an officer has done up, or the Sheriff had a few extra bucks in the traffic enforcement budget it's a great looking ride. Nice use of LEDs and gotta love that push bumper, must be PITting a lot of deer down that way <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/hysterical.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

What if it is an R/T? They could've just put police steelies on an R/T. Would be just as easy right? Would prolly take less time than attaching all those emblems and a hood?

OOPS. You're right, I forgot there was a plain R/T as well....

Well the hood is a few bolts, and the R/T emblems are adhesive. I dropped an e-mail to the Sheriff asking him to settle this debate for us. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/police.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

"I think you guys are confusing the R/T trim package with the SRT-8 Charger."
Thanks James, you're right! I did have the two versions (R/T and SRT-8) confused in my post. We were actually toying with the idea of dressing our unmarked as a SRT-8 and not an R/T as I mistakenly said in my earlier post. An R/T really doesn't look that much different than the police version trim-wise, but the SRT-8? BIG visual difference (and the addition of the 7.1L Hemi doesn't hurt either... )

The police package is just a Charger SE body with the SRT suspension and, to a point, a better suspension. The three motors available are a 3.5, 5.7, and a 6.1 (SRT only). I've yet to physically see a 6.1 under the hood of a Police package Charger. Had the opportunity to drive a local departments 5.7 at a local dealer and wahoo! The SRT may look and perform like Satans own Mopar but the Police package is the real steal deal. As a diehard Dodge guy I figured I'd help out this post before it became too confusing......... BTW Lincoln RI has a new paint job.....I didnt say nicer did I <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
"6.1 HEMI, said the Dodge guy"
My bad.. typo. Thanks for fixing my goof. I did mean 6.1L (although 7.1 would be really, REALLY interesting!). I just finished talking with our local source for Dodge police vehicles. The 2009 police sedans are coming equipped with a "second generation" 5.7L Hemi... the HP has been upped to 368. Yowza!! I thought 340 ponies was sufficient! I'll have to wait until June of next year before we see our '09's, though. As far as I know, unless someone bought a civilian version and put it in service, there aren't any police Chargers with the 6.1L.

There a few computer tricks, all the motors come out of the factory de-tuned. When I got my Durango serviced last week in Johnston there was a group of mechanics I used to know from a former Dodge dealer that showed me that a 6.1 SRT-8 motor can crank out over 520 horse from the factory.......you just need the 25,000 computer terminal to unleash them (and it voids the warranty <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_crazy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> )
The first NCHP unmarked Hemi Charger was put on eBay for $12,000 by NC Fleet Services.
I'm standing in line for one that comes out of service, but maybe not for a year or two till prices come down a bit...somewhere in the $7k range...the real steals will be if WV actually sells off their 6 Chargers. They hated them, left them unmarked, and now all of them are on "desk" duty in adminstration. Low miles, not beat to death...huzzah! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/drcruiser.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
