This might be a stupid question, but what is that square thing mounted on the drivers side, on the top of the cab, in front of the lightbar? This rig was a 75' water chief until the aerial was removed in the 1990's.

Encinitas owned 2 ALF Century rigs. One was yours, the 1981 ALF water chief that served as T2374 for quite awhile. The other was a 1984 pumper.

I have several pics of Encinitas rigs, but not of that rig prior to the conversion. Maybe somebody out there can help with a pic.

Also, I have a copy of an ALF delivery list which verifies that serial # was a 75' water chief.



I am surprised that you did not know that! Glad I said something. You now have another piece of the history of that rig.

No, we really had no idea that it was once a Water Chief. We've only known it since it came back to American LaFrance of Los Angeles in Fontana about two years ago now. Prior to that, I had never even seen the truck in service. I certainly would've never thought it had a life as something else other than just an engine.



One of these days, we'll buy a "normal" truck! <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_crazy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />



P.S. - If anyone has pictures of it in its Water Chief form, I'd LOVE to see them.

Where are you restoring that rig? The first photo looks like the tower at the VCFD RTC.

I took the liberty of sending an e-mail to the Encinitas FD in an effort to elicit more info on your rig. I asked them who did the conversion, and asked if they happened to have a pic of it when it still had the aerial. I will post the reply here for you.

Yep ... the first picture was taken at the Oxnard College Regional Fire Academy last January when we had it up there for a Crown Firecoach Enthusiasts Club meeting. The truck is kept in Orange, California, for the time being.
