I never thought of it that way. It came to mind when I was in my garage and I was comparing my Crown to my Hahn two of the best fire engines ever built but one is decked out and the other is not.

This rig was originally built for Redondo Beach,CA and delivered as an open cab and just a pumper. It was sent back to Crown twice. First to have the cab enclosed and second to have the telesqurt added.

Yep, agree with your comments... These days, and for a while, money dictates, especially in CA. But they also say that the bells and whistles don't put the fire out, so if we can use the money someplace else to benefit us, why waste it on "decorations."

aaah yes, i remember this havasu truck, from back in the 1980's winding it's way down the bumper to bumper traffic trying to get out to site 6 for medical aids, sometimes they would have 4-5 medicals going at one time

Firebuff, thanks for the Oakland rig, that is a new photo to me, and I believe the only one in color. I grew up in Oakland and remember seeing that rig as a young child (at least I think it was that one, I believe it was Oaklands only Snorkel).

To add to the comments of the others, in the west we don't really have the volunteer culture of the East coast. Volunteer departments are volunteer because that is all they can afford. The career departments buy good quality equipment but not a lot of extras because they are paying salaries, many of the VFD's are lucky to keep fuel in the rigs at times.
On the east coast you have volunteer departments in communities that could afford career departments but instead reward the volunteers with stuff (extra bling on the rigs, fancy stations etc). I really can not think of a west coast version of Mt Horeb, PG or the various Long Island departments.
Salaries out here for the career guys tend to be higher too, from what I understand, so more money goes into staffing leaving less for non-essential items. Many of the big cities out out here ran commercial cab apparatus through the 90s, because they were more economical. I think a lot of these cities started buying Quantums and such because of the tech and housing boom freeing up purse strings. It will be interesting to see if some of these cities start looking at commercial cabs again due to the economy.

Yep, the ex-Avalon engine is owned by Smokey's. Hired this exact engine for our wedding 2-years ago. There's an article I submitted on the engine in a past issue of CFE's newsletter.

She was built for the Carmichael Fire Department in 1965 which is a suburb or Sacramento. She was delivered painted a deep red color similar to what San Francisco used and was repainted yellow after just a few years. She was later sold to the El Dorado County Fire Department and remained in service in the same general area in the Sierra foothils above Sactamento.

She tended to get relettered when moved from dept. to dept. under El Dorado County so there are pics floating around with different lettering on this same rig. She was repowered from her original Hall-Scott 1091 gas motor to a Cummins NTC-330 in the late 90s and was then sold by El Dorado County to Ozawkie, KS. When Ozawkie received this rig, they repainted the yellow which had become tired when Carmichael painted it so many years ago and added updated lighting to the existing lighting, strobes and so forth. For the most part, Ozawkie kept the rig original.

She served at Cool CA as part as the El Dorado Fire District, or Northside Fire District. Cool is Northeast of Sacramento just south of Auburn CA near the confluence of the American River.

One is in South America, one is privately owned in Mass., one was for sale with engine issues on eBay in Tenn a few months back, and they still have the wide body pumper. There are no signs they plan to dispose of that truck unless something catastrophic would happen to it from a mechanical perspective. The rumor is that there are SO many people lined up to try and purchase it from them that even if it had mechanical issues and they let it go, someone would still probably pay handsomely for it....and Montvale, FD would be laughing all the way to the bank. I have driven by a number of times, and never found anyone home.
