This is the former quarters of Engine 31 Battalion 2 and Water Tower 1, located at 87 Lafayette Street. Also housed here at various times were Satellite 1, Squad 8, and Smoke Ejector 1.

Engine 31 was disbanded in 1972, Water Tower 1 was disbanded in 1957, and Batt. 2 was relocated to Engine 24 Ladder 5.

The building was later used as a tv studio, but not sure what it's used for now.

That is a beautiful house--if it's not, it should be on the National Register of Historic Places. Wow!

I agree wholeheartedly! One of my favorite firehouses of all time for sure.

Thanks for the info Crossbronx. Its a shame that it still isn't utilized by the department.

Question for FDNY boys... E 82's house has 2 doors.... "back in the day" how did they fit... E 82, E 85, L 31,TCU 712 and a chief?

Are the bays deep, so they could back in next to each and still get out?

Does anyone have pics yet of the new quarters of Engine 201/Ladder 114/Bn40? I've seen a few from friends who run there but nothing real clear.

Toured the house the day they poured concrete for the bay floor. Very big house, not quite the same feel as the old "Emerald Isle"butI guess it"ll grow on the Brothers. I will try and post what pics I have. A VERY expensive firehouse somewhere between $11 and $16 million. WOW, we could build at least 10 firehouses here in the Cincinnati area.

That's because the city always gives all their friends the expensive contracts, who in turn, bill the shit out of the city. This is EXACTLY one of the reasons why the City of NY is in the financial bind that we're in.

Heard that the two engines piggybacked each other on the engine side, 712's Rearmount and the chief's car went in the middle, and 31's tiller was on the truck side.

Marc,

At one time this was a museum also. I think a private insurance company had it - I think it was THE HOME INSURANCE or something like that... Would have to pick my father's brain. I think the museum was there in the late 1970's to earily 1980's

When were you guys there? Were the rigs in quarters? I recognize all three cars that are parked out on the apron and in the street, so I know who was working.

If memory serves, TCU-712 was only in house at 82/31 when it was in service. The rest of the time it was in another nearby house.
