Not defending the MFA, but last I knew they were funded from a surcharge on insurance. Unless your local city can tap that fund, what they buy or don't buy has no bearing on who gets laid off.



That said, I concur the future looks ugly for all of us in the short term.

Wow! Monterey is our 1st due mutual aid company and this is a blast from the past for me, as a young kid I remember being fascinated with the front mount pump on this rig. The firehouse in the background should have been very new at the time of this shot, maybe mid 1980's?

If you look closely you will see '76 near the rear cab grab bar, this is the year of the rig. Trying to remember the unit # it had, Engine 2 is the most likely candidate.

Hey Commish...... do you know when and the location that the picture was taken... It looks like it was after it left the city...due to the siren being different , the bumper is not bent and there is no number plate on the front. I know when it first left the city some one from Milton bought it. They sold it to a school in Conn. for a while ... then I heard someone in Great Barrington had bought it...

I will look into it, but I believe one of our former Asst. Chiefs may have that truck in his barn.

James you are right about the insurance surcharges. I will elaborate a little more on both the surcharges and new truck. This tower was ordered almost a year ago against the many wishes of the instructors who will typically use it. The majority thought for training purposes, a straight aerial would benefit most students here at the academy - after all, how many departments have specialized equipment like a tower? But the person in charge ordered what they wanted and who knows if it will work for us. It is a great piece of equipment and I was there the day it arrived at the academy and then it went back to Greenwood for a punch list. Not sure when it will be back or what it will be used for.



On Jim's comment - things ARE bad at the academy as well because our great Governor decided that the insurance industry had it as bad as everyone else and decided to cut back on what finances they send to support the programs at the academy. From what I understand, there is no recruit program over the summer even though there is a need and call for it due to departments that have SAFER Grants and are still hiring new firefighters. The gas program has all but been eliminated, the maritime program has been cut completely and the majority of the other programs have almost all been cancelled. The maritime program actually makes money as Mass. Maritime Academy pays for the training. The hours I work as an instructor have been severly cut and they are operating day to day and even canceling instructors as needed to make sure the funds last through the end of the fiscal year. I understand my two days next week were cancelled already. This is as bad as I have ever seen it in my 10 years there and it will only get worse when people who do not understand what we do are making decisions for us! The many layers of civilian staff that work upstairs all still have jobs, but I'm not sure why - there are virtually no classes going on so there are no certificates to print, virtually no payroll to produce, etc, etc.



With all this going on, regardless of where the funding is coming from - it is EXTREMELY frustrating to see all these shiny new pieces of equipment keep rolling in yard in the form of ladder towers, training trailers that sit parked in our way, haz mat trucks, haz mat squads etc even if they are bought with federal grant money. The basic firefighting programs have always made do with well-used fire gear, old hose and the simple basics we need to train our firefighters in the BASICS despite our pleas.



My rant went way off base, but I won't apologize! Hope this helps.

Sheffield, MA Engine 2 - Pierce Dash







It's playmates 1 & 3

Engine 1 is their oldest (1988) rig and 3 I believe is their newest. They are expecting a tanker to ADD to the fleet to be in service by this time next year and are expanding the firehouse to right of Engine 1 as we speak (I offered one of our younger members as fill - but nobody took me up on it).

New Marlborough, MA Engine 4, being one of the few non-officers "qualified" to operate it E-4 was my buggy for yesterday's parades. 2006 all wheel drive International/KME 750/750 25 Foam with the depts' second set of "jaws". FWIW to put it away E-1 and R-1 have to be out of the barn and you back it in and parallel park it next to Truck 5 (pick up) then put the other two rigs back. To fit all the pieces of the puzzle in some of the rigs actually have to touch or be within less than a inch of each other. It is special to say the least - supposedly work on our new station is starting soon - not soon enough if you ask me or anyone else who has put E-4 away. One of the young guys left his gear in the rear compartment - the BS we had to go through to get it out without pull everything apart was akin to a circus act.

Savoy, MA is a mirco town of about 700 people, they recently received federal grant money to purchase TWO new rigs.

The FD sponsored this year's Memorial Day Parade and invited neighboring FD to come to show their support to the armed forces and veterans via a very loud and proud community parade. Video of the parade is uploading at the moment.
