Kansas and Missouri
Liberty, Missouri Fire Department (North Liteburn Road)

Fire House 3 built early 1970's

Pumper 3

Pumper 1 (Reserve)

Fire House Three was constructed in the early 1970's for the new Hallmark Card distribution center and the new Liberty Hospital. This fire house's first due district is still rural with very little development. This Fire House in years past has been browned out from time to time when Liberty went through staffing shortages. Pumper Three is always staffed now with three due to the distance for the second due company and for KCFD Auto-Aid. This is now the primary Auto-Aid Pumper for response to KCFD. Pumper Three responds with three and Battalion One responds to make the fourth member. The department reserve pumper called Pumper 1 is stored at this fire house also.

Parsons, Kansas Fire Department

Fire Headquarters No. 1

built 1936 as WPA building

Two Brass Fire Poles

Parsons has two fire houses. Fire House Two is the typical one story two bay 1950's fire house. It amazes me that Parsons has two fire houses, due to the size of the city.

NOTE: Noticed the vacant lot and metal building. This was due to the May of 2001 Tornado that struck Parsons. The entire city block was leveled except for the fire house. The Tornado blew in the bay doors and all the windows but structural engineers found the building to be in great shape. The engineers credited the strength because it was a WPA building. The crew said the debris was stacked against the front of the fire house and they had to crawl out the second floor windows.

Fire pole one of Two located in Bunkroom

NOTE: The white column at the rear of the pole hole houses counter weights. Notice near the cover two white ropes extending into the column. When you slide down your body pushes the plywood trap doors open. The counter weights then close the trap door once you are clear. Pretty neat idea, nothing like Fireman engineering.

Soldier Township Fire Department (North side surburb of Topeka, Kansas)

One paid Twenty-Four hour driver on duty each day. The Assistant Chief lived in the fire house until late 1990's and the Fire Chief lived in the fire house until 2007. Note pitched roof behind that was the Chief's living quarters two separate nice houses bigger than a duplex.

Chanute, Kansas Fire Department

Fire Headquarters

This is one of two Fire Houses in Kansas that are built under the civic auditorium/ city hall. Emporia, Kansas is the second.

In Chanute there were two brass poles that leading from the living quarters. In the early 1990's they renovated and moved the living quarters behind the apparatus bays. Now one brass fire pole leads from the second floor training room.

Two Brass Fire Poles drop from the second floor day room and bunkroom

NOTE: The bay where Battalion 1 is parked was constructed prior to delivery of the 1973 American LaFrance 100ft Ladder Chief colored RED. The new ladder would not fit in the other bays.
