Air Emergency at PDX.

Portland sends a first alarm assignment to these rather common events. This Dash 8, ready to land

on runway 28L, had some possible mechanical trouble, but landed safely.

The Charles River runs parallel to the road I am on, but I cannot see what it is.



Well it turned out to be US Coast Guard Rescue 6025 which is based at Airstation Cape Cod according to the markings on the bird.



So am stopped, on a major road trying my damnedest to get a shot of this beauty, when she turns and comes back over me. What a great sight!

Interesting story regarding the Blue Angles in Wisconsin for the air show: During a practice one of them had engine trouble and apparently also lost control of it's ability to brake. Because the airfield here in Madison @ Truax Field has an arrester cable for the Air National Guard F-16's in the event of an emergency, the stricken F-18 flew (or limped rather) to Madison and landed safely using the emergency arrester cable. The C-130 support plane, a.k.a. Fat Albert, later flew in, swapped out engines and away they both went.

Was it an arrestor cable or a barrier? I only ask because I didn't think USAF aircraft had hooks.

I believe all F-15 and 16 series aircraft are equipped with arresting gear for emergency use however I may be mistaken. The landing gear etc. is not beefed up like naval aircraft as it is not intended for these aircraft to land at such a high rate of decent.

USAF fighters DO have tailhooks. They ARE NOT designed for the ability to land on aircraft carriers, but for instances exactly described above. Some USAF bases do have arrestor cables at the end of the runway, but it, like the tailhook, isnt your traditional arrestor cable found on a carrier. Its a cable attached to a chain which drags on the ground effectively trying to slow down a plane which has had a brake failure in a reasonable distance.

Great photo!



That was the first plane I ever flew in!



I had literally never been in a plane before in my entire life, and then I got to go with the Golden Knights during an air show, and sat next to the open door at 12,000 ft! One of the greatest trips of my life!
