The Seagrave engine is a c.1950 750 GPM, bought by PBF from Barnesboro,PA. Probably the only used rig ever bought by PBF from a VFD. Also note the compartmented rear fenders, unusual on a Seagrave of this vintage.

This was the first diesel engine in the city. Originally assigned to Engine 1. Was reassigned to 14 when the city took delivery of the Ford Louisville/Grummans and one was assigned to Engine 1.

This picture was taken by Bob Milnes from Coral Gables FL. It was one similiar to this that John Schmidt autographed to me in his book. Also it was an enjoyment talking to Joe "Sparky" Parks during his days as the driver of 14 Engine. Sparky is a great guy and a wealth of knowledge of the 2nd Battalion.

Sparkys a hell of a guy, as was schmidt. Its very depressing, when i go through this thread all i can think about is "this company is no more, that engine is axed, no more, no more, no more, that ones still around, axed, no more" PBF went from 60 some companys in the 70s to a mere 30 some today. Sad how much the cut backs have taken away and closed off.



I have heard stories that sparky would sometimes wear one of those red plastic helmits with the blinking light on the top while driving the open cab engine. Funny

The tiller is one of the 5 Pierce TDA's, and the engine is a 1992 Pierce Dash 4 door. The first 4- doors ordered.

There are 3 quints in service in the city. Quints 18, 27 and 23. When dispatched they are referred to as "Engines". These came into service in a reorganization back in 1992. All three houses had engines and trucks. But 18, 23, and 27 had the trucks eliminated and were converted to quints. The city at that time bought 4 American LaFrance 75' quints. One for each, and one held in reserve. They were just replaced by the Pierce's that Shoop just shot.

Any idea why the 3 trucks have ALCOA rims on it but the Quint has stock?

I believe it is because the quints have the heavier axle on the back, and it doesn't allow for alcoa rims. Quint 18 doesn't have them either.

This delivery phot taken at the academy in 1997. The city bought 4 of these aerials from Ferrara with 109' aerials.

4 engine and 4 truck remain downtown. Well in the "uptown" section of the city.

Did we ever get an answer to the 34 house question ? IF not I may be able to shed some light on it

Truck 34 and engine 34 were in the same house in the Perrysville section of the city and the new station that truck 34 now sits in is in a more central location of the brighton heights area of the city. At one time EMS and Truck 34 shared space at Truck 34 house That no longer is the case, Ems has moved to the Old 36 station about a mile away. On the Nortside of Pittsburgh we now have 5 engine Companys and 2 ladders Engines 32, 34, 35, 37, 38.

Truck 34 and Truck 32 When the new station was built in the woods run section of the city. It sat vacant while the city and the union fought over station closeing on the nortside. Finally EMS moved in and were alone for a while till the city moved truck 34 in with them, then after a while Ems moved to the now vacant 36 house. All my facts may not be crystal clear but thats how I remember most of it.

How many Pierce aerials is that in the last 2 years Shoop?

All three quints have been replaced. Total of 7 105' aerials from Pierce. More orders should be taking place in the near future.

2009 - 4 Pierce Ladders, 1 Pierce Quint, 2 KME Engines, 1 IHC/KME MAC



Also heard, that KME is about to go out the door. We will see, I'm hoping the city starts buying Pierce engines.
