I decided to cruise down to FD HQ and see the new Smeal parked out on the lot and get some over the fencers! Thank God for telephoto lenses! This thing is BEAST!!! These are just like our 125' Spartan Gladiator/Smeal Aerials but with a Spartan Gladiator: Evolution Chassis and cab. Also, sporting the Black over red with white ladder... I only wish the ladder were black too... But, I was blown away! Ican't wait 'til the shop gets a hold of it so I can tool around on it and Really photograph it! Another thing is that it is numbered for H&L 5 which I am pretty sure that is gonna be H&L 15's new designation! I think it is going along with which district they are in. Can't wait for the next one! Should be a NEW H&L company! I think every district except for 3 is gonna have their own H&L. H&L 4 is so close to districts 3 and 4 they can cover both.[/quote]

Nice work getting all the new stuff Ben...the new H& is definately different.

The new medics look good, but Matt said they took away interior space for additional exterior compartments. I can see a new compartment or two on the drivers side.

Im not sure if I can ride on the City medics anymore since im done with class. I need to get ahold of the EMS

Ben,

Great looking truck! Any truth that St.Louis is looking at a few traditional style engines?

Yes, we're getting some pumpers.

No, the new H&L doesn't have a Q. They are being re-numbered to reflect their district. H&L 15's guys will be getting this one. Training is being conducted for the next 3 days on the new truck.

Medic 2, 5, 10, 12 are in and were getting radios and/or computer docking stations installed yesterday.

I still stand by what I said about the trucks. Nearly every EMS person I spoke to is with me that we do not like them. I walked around one of the new trucks with the shop manager yesterday and showed him how bad the trucks were spec'd. I physically showed him how the wrong dementions were given for space for the stair-chair. Smoke was coming out of my ears about the lousy interior space. He looked puzzeled when I told him that people who work on the trucks should be included in the planning of new trucks.

WHAT??? Have you lost your mind??? The next thing you'll want is to help design the stations you'll work out of, the uniforms and turnout gear you'll wear and the tools and equipment you'll use to do your job. Then you'll probably want input on department policies and procedures, for crying out loud!

To bad on the Q siren for 5 Truck. I noticed the Tractor Trailer has one, why? The Truck looks sharp love the gold leaf on the doors. So will there be a HL 1 and but no HL3?

Great looking rig, but that rear overhang is absolutely huge! It reminds me of those Mack MC/LTI mid-mounts that Toronto runs/ran...

I believe the tractor trailer(s) were bought through a grant. St. Louis City, along with the surrounding counties have the identical units. And if I remember correctly, they carry the same equipment and are stored in the same place. The Q is just an extra that all of them have.

There will eventually be a H&L in every district. So we will have a H&L 1-6. Some trucks will get shuffled around to accomplish this. So we may move an engine or two, along with some medic units to make this happen. As for the engine companies, I dont know if they are changing when the straight pumpers enter the department. And I don't know when they will get here.

the total length on the new unit is 46' 10" per my dad, who had training with the rig last day because he is repair shop personnel. its a beast! the reason for the overhang is the slightly wider rear steps for the turntable.

Hey Ben,

Do you know the lenght difference between the new H&L and the older 125 footers? The new seems a little longer

We only have the 1 new H&L. The other H&L should be in shortly. The word is that H&L5 will be on the streets in the coming days. Again, NOTHING has been mentioned about pumpers on the way.

The new medic 5 was quickly removed from the HQ parking lot the otherday when the "spelling error" was found and was tucked in the back corner of the shop.
