Rescue-4, Queens 1996 HME/Saulsbury #SR-9604. There were some problems with these rigs, and they proved too big too.

J,

Was that one of the reasons for going back to the two man cab?

G, Yes, I believe so- that's what I heard. Not sure of the overall length, but I saw up close and the men were complaining that they were monsters to get around in !

The 1996 HME Rescues had both the rear interior walkthrough body AND the rear cab seating area....Sitting in the rear of the cab riding backwards accomplished very little when the back of the rig was set up with all kinds of equipment for diffrent types of jobs. Equipment that could be donned (rope harness, drysuit, etc while enroute to the job) The result was a longer truck with extra space that nobody used and made the turning radius ungodly.

thanks for the great pics. why were the engines "caged"? to avoid damage from vandalism?

Why do all the Mack's and the ALF's have the triangle or cover over the siren speaker. Is it a sound dampener? Just curious?

Stay Safe,

If memory serves correctly, its intended to prevent vandals from removing the speaker cone (which can easily unscrew by hand).

This rig was still out at "The Rock" in July 2001 when I went through Proby School. Climbed the main a few times. She was a tired girl by then.

Early 80's ALF repainted & restriped into the Caission Appartaus

[/quote]

This was an '83 ALF that NEVER entered frontline service. It was always the caisson rig. It was restriped in the late '90's to match the current FDNY rigs. They got rid of it right after Sept. 11th. when they made one of the donated rigs the new caisson.
