Thanks for posting the great Gardenville shots. Firepics JM82 will really appreciate them when he gets back from Vegas. He was an old Gardenville volly.



Just in North County alone I've come up with several departments that aren't around anymore. Burke City (now part of Florissant Valley), Carsonville (now part of Northeast), Midland (now part of Mid-County), Moline (now Metro-North), Normandy (now Northeast), Pine Lawn (now part of Normandy), Ramona Park (now part of Berkeley), Spring Valley (now part of Ferguson), and Wellston (now Mid-County). I'll try to get some photos up of a couple of these.



The main reason that Wellston and other depts have changed their names is the ballot box. They needed a better name to represent the multiple communities that they served. Wellston changed their name to Mid-County in April of 1984. As far as I know (unless someone can prove me wrong), the two 1984 Spartan/E-Ones were delivered under the Mid-County banner.



And yes, Mid-County had a spectacular 5th alarm job at a pallet warehouse on Friday night. And I slept right through it. Spanish Lake's L-5125 flowed from about 01:30 hours til 10:00 hours. And my rig, E-5110 went on the 4th alarm. The first due captain requested a 2nd and 3rd alarm on arrival as well as 3 extra ladders. Can't believe I missed it!!!! And hey STLFIRE2494, haven't heard from you since I saw you and your friends at Mardi Gras.

Mid-County is a fine ghetto on the Missouri side. Across the Mississippi River from St.Louis of course is the even finer town of East St.Louis. In its heyday East St.Louis had 8 stations. Now on a good day they have 4 stations open. The city is trying to cut the dept even further. Just this week the city decided to cut the cops and firefighters salary by 25%. Here are a few classic ESTLFD rigs...

Here you see 425 at a general alarm fire at the old Hunter Meat Packing Plant in 1989. This was classic East St.Louis. They called St.Louis FD on mutual aid. When St.Louis got up and operating, all the East St.Louis rigs returned to quarters. Needless to say, St.Louis didn't stick around long.

1770 would've been much better-looking with a Spartan Gladiator Classic cab, IMHO. The Sirius just doesn't do a whole lot for me. And how about some Code 3 or Whelen LED lighting! They've stuck with the old school-looking Power Arc light bar. Gross. Another minus in my book for that one. Spotlights on the cab? Another old school idea. That's what those 2 brow lights and the quartz lights on either side of the pump panel are for! It's 2010, not 1990!



I remember when that '73 Seagrave ladder truck was solid red, had 2 red gumball lights, and was called 'Ladder 1'. Its Detroit diesel was so loud you could hear it coming a mile away! That was a great truck to get a roll-by going Code 3 back in the day!



Great comparison shot seeing the size difference, especially the one from the rigs being nose-to-nose. You don't always realize how the modern rigs have gotten larger until you see a pic like that!

Where does all the money go??? When the Casino Queen opened up in East St.Louis in the early 1990s they purchased 3 engines and a 75' quint and there were all kinds of hopes that East St.Louis was going to turn around. Well, it didn't happen. If you drive through ESTL today it looks the same as it did before the casino. So, where does all the money go???

That Affton Ford C pumper was the first fire truck that I ever drove. Going back to the summer of 1984, I remember that I was a little nervous when I was told I'd be learning how to drive and pump that rig, because the biggest vehicle I'd ever driven at that time was my 4 door 1973 Chevrolet Impala! In hindsight that pumper was so easy to drive, with its short wheelbase. Today I drive a Pierce Dash pumper that's about twice as long as that Ford C!



The ambulance, 306, which was staffed by EMT's or Advanced First-Aid personnel, used to be dispatched to assist 305 on full arrests instead of a pumper(if 306 was staffed, which most of the time it was), or it would be dispatched by the crew of 305 (which was ALS) after they (305) arrived on scene and assessed the patient and deemed that the call/patient was BLS. 306 would also be dispatched if 305 was out on another call.



Back then, the districts/departments dispatched by South County Fire Alarm didn't run their ambulances on mutual aid to eachother like they do now. St. Louis County Ambulance, which was ALS, would run into Affton and Lemay when their ambulances were out on other calls.



306 was only in service maybe a year or so before being placed out of service and running strictly as a reserve ambulance, before Affton purchased a second Braun ambulance to replace 305. By then, County Ambulance would fill-in for 305 it was out.



Rescue 3 would get dispatched with 33 on EMS calls, if it was staffed, after we stopped running 306. Sometimes if we had a full house at 3's, we could have up to 6-8 people or more on an EMS call, just with 33 and Rescue 3, plus the 2 medics from 305 or County Ambulance. It also ran still alarms and 1st Alarms, again, if it was staffed. It also had a 5 bottle cascade system on it.

Here is the last I saw of the ex 33 Pumper and ex 72 Pumper. In this shot it is being used by Shady Valley FPD as 7311 (I think).
