Tulsa, OK

1955 ALF #L-5271

75' w/booster

Gas/manual

Here is a series of photos of City of Tulsa vehicle number 5605, which was always known as a 1956 model. However, it was actually a 1955 model that was shipped from the factory on August 16, 1955. It was originally assigned to Ladder 2 at 5's. When L2 and L3 received their new ALF 100-footers in 1957, #5605 was moved to L5 at 14's where it served until 1968. The first photo, taken about 1962, shows her original configuration.

When the original engine failed in the 1970s, it was replaced with a Ford 534 gas V8. Because of space issues, the alternator was actually bolted to the truck's frame! The truck was repainted and a beacon and west coast mirrors were added about the same time. This truck was used to open L12 at 28's in 1972, and then saw reserve service at 29s (second photo) and then 3's.

Steve,

What a great story. Thanks for sharing. Love the pump cans on the steps a true Truckman's tool. Are the TFD Ladders still non matching or do they reflect the fire house and engine company? Did they remount the B&M Siro-drift on the 1982 refurbish. Where at in South East KS? Noticed the outriggers are not down, scary. Thanks, Rick

In 1982 it was sent back to ALF for a refurb including a new Century cab, Diesel engine, automatic transmission, power steering, air brakes, and 100' stick. The original manual outriggers were retained, as were the (refinished) wood ground ladders. The booster system was removed. The original cab remained in Tulsa; rumor has it that it went to a whiteshirt's home as part of a recreation room. The third and fourth photos show her on the day she arrived back at the shop in 1983. She was one of only two TFD rigs to have the Federal #174 beacons; they oscillated back and forth, instead of rotating (the other rig was Engine 51, a 1965 Walters CB3000 crash truck). The box seen in these photos under the ladder contained a transmission that was sent with the truck, but that couldn't be used in the refurb. It was placed in service as Ladder 10 at 27's, where the truckies complained regularly about the lack of compartment space. Her last assignment was in reserve at 29's.

The water cans are still a TFD staple, but not mounted on the front bumpers.

Tulsa's 13 ladder companies were renumbered to match station assignments in 1987.

The B&M Siro-Drift was removed (and mounted on another rig) before #5605 was sent for her refurb.

Near Oswego...I wondered about the outriggers, as well!

Thanks for the info Steve. Hope all is well.
