Matt,

Both of the Seagrave tillers (xT202 and xT205/T204) are in reserve status and of course Alexandria still has their LTI tiller at Truck 208 until it is replaced, if memory serves me right it is in this years budget but I will inquire more when I am out there in late May.

Hopefully it will be a new tiller. <img src='http://www.firepics.net/groupboards/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Thumbsup' />

At one point the rumor was that they might be going in the direction of a rear mount ladder. Late last year I had heard no one was sure what was being looked at. This will be the first new rig since the new chief was hired so who knows what direction they will go in.

A few items of interest apparatus and apparatus staffing wise from city budget documents.

First, the city is planning to add Station 210 in the Eisenhower Valley with anticipated completion and online in 2012. Units slated for this station are an Engine and an ALS Medic unit. These will be new positions, not units moved from other stations.

Second, the city is planning to reconstruct or add onto the current Station 203 with an anticipated completion in 2015. A new ALS Medic unit will be added to Station 203 once the reconstruct or renovation/addition is complete.

Third, there were near simultaneous major incidents after a line of very severe thunderstorms swept through the DC area. Hundreds of calls in all jurisdictions and a 3 alarm incident at Alexandria Knolls West taxed the system (including communications) and resources. There were 5 firefighter injuries from this incident. Half an hour after the first call on the 3 alarm fire (lightning strike on the roof of a large hi-rise building) there was a 2nd alarm struck forlightning strike fire on the roof of a hotel off of Eisenhower Road. The new (at the time) fire chief and city manager recognized the need for an outside critique of this incident and retained the gentleman who is now heading up the investigation into the Charleston, SC fatalities. His report to the city cites many recomendations. Three directly affect apparatus staffing. One recommendation calls for going from 3 to 4 firefighters on all supression apparatus. The second recommendation calls for full staffing a heavy rescue apparatus (currently Rescue 206 is cross staffed with staffing from Rescue Engine 206). The third recommendation is to staff 24/7/365 the Light and Air Unit with a driver/operator.

I love the way places waste precious resources ($$$$) to pay some "expert" to tell them to do things that common sense should have told them to do in the first place.

I thought R206 was staffed by it's own crew. An air unit staffed 24/7/365? Does AFD's air unit go on that many calls, or is that just a precautionary move?

No Rescue 206 is single pulled with the cross manned staffing form Rescue Engine 206.

I am in DC on one of my severall times a year trip to town. I had planned to only shoot Pierce rigs, especially focusing on Rescue Engines (in the next few weeks look for shots from Mount Pleasant WI, Zion, IL, and Libertyville, MD and a whole bunch from PA I will be taking on Monday and Tuesday next week) but I had to do my tour of Alexandria stations my first full day in town. I stopped by the City shops to see what was there and I got as many shots as I can (not great but I will post those over the next week or so).

So I was walking around and came up on the rear corner of the shop area and I found the flatbed pickup that Limeguy had earlier posted. I started to get a shot when I noticed something hooked up to the rear of it.

An interesting find is this Combat Support Products Alpha Class Foam Firefighting duel tote trailer. The monitor is a TFT. The companies website has a few photos of the delivery and say the rig is set up for ethanol.

Alexandria's Medical Support Unit, MCU, at the Alexandria City city shop.

Alexandria's MSU was purchased prior to the other NCR Mass Casualty Units and was therefore not part of the NCR MCU order.

Alexandria, VA Fire Department - davemcclung - 06-06-2008

The MSU is a 2006 Freighliner M-2 Hackney 16' body.

Alexandria, VA Fire Department - davemcclung - 06-06-2008

Alexandria's Light and Air Unit which is stationed at Station 207 on Duke Street and South Quaker Lane.

2006 Freightliner M-2 Hackney 19' body. This unit was part of a multi unit National Capital Region (NCR) order for common Light and Air Units.

Oh I heard today that the replacement for Truck 208 which is in this years budget will probably be a tiller and probably a Pierce.

The mystery of the new Foam Trailer has become more clear. Apparently Norfolk Southern Railroad went and opened an Ethanol tranloading faciltity in the west end of town. Here is information from the city website. http://www.alexandriava.gov/special/transl...t.aspx?id=13688

The city is fighting the facility and the foam trailer is one of several responses to deal with the safety aspects of this new facility. The new facility while along a rail line is very close to a metro station (1000 feet), very very close to school (600 feet) and a high density residential neighborhood (the former Cameron Run Defense Logistics Center) on the other side of the school.

In doing a little more research it looks as if the vehicle that is included in the picture was purchased or is being reimbursed/depreciated to tow the trailer.

The Foam Trailer contains two 330 gallon tanks for alcohol resistant ARFF (AR-AFFF) needed for ethanol fires. According to memos the trailer is intended to be stored at Station 210 once it is constructed in the next 5 years, in the Eisenhower valley near the west end facility.

I just love LED lightbars. Here is the LED lightbar on Engine 204. Now who couldn't see that coming from a mile away?
